thank ya sir! I'm pretty pumped with the turnout, wasn't certain i was going to be able to make the brackets work but i just kind of wedged the lights in and built the brackets around them and somehow it worked out really well.
Hi there! I just spent about an hour reading through your thread and I cannot thank you enough for the detail and effort and time! I have zero mechanical skills, so everything you've done is wicked cool to me and I'm impressed x9283487. I can't wait to see your next steps and again, thank you for blessing us all with these pictures and write-ups!

Glad to hear someone appreciates all my tinkering and complaining about it. You say you have no mech skills but ive learned all of the offroad/toyota stuff in this venture and this was my first motor rebuild so know that if you wanted you could get yourself in just as deep and still find your way out. Just research everything and triple check
Haha i could probably make another set if you really want the same thing. Need to replace my drill bits first as i broke a couple but they were surprisingly easy to make. I wanted to slot the holes but didnt have a good way to do so. Luckily the fog brackets were slotted instead.

:bigok:fair enough and i get that sentiment for sure, I've had it happen a few times that i had to uber or drive a sketchy project car to work because i opened a can of worms on the daily.
when rebuilding the motor mine was far from the daily but once we moved and i didnt bring my other car to Utah, it became my daily overnight. Luckily i was able to get it mostly buttoned up and running right a couple weeks before the move and while i tinker on it a few times a week, its pretty solid to drive anytime. I still dismantle things when needed but i make sure its at the beginning of the weekend so i have time to get it back together.

Back at it yesterday
Got a replacement shiftknob as the goob who had the truck before me put a 6 speed knob covered in electrical tape in.
got the fog harness in
and the harness i bought came with this switch which is mostly for my M-in-L's sake as she's obsessed with bigfoot. we'll see, might leave it.
did a little extra reinforcing on the skid plate and tied in the frame tabs so it all bolts in as a single unit.
also made a couple blockoffs but dont love them up close so i'll probably redo eventually
Somehow had time to finish early, shower, load up the crew and go out to Antelope Island State Park for the evening

Decided that i needed more light for reversing into the garage and in general so i got some LEDs to wire in to the reverse signal.
adding those is what inspired me to get the dent out of my rear bumper. It wasnt a huge deal but i had some time and saw a cheap hammer and dolly kit at harbor freight so i figured, what the hell.
Replacement bumper corner was 50 bucks but i wanted to try this out hoping i could fix a few other fender dings afterward and now i feel pretty good about it. Paint will probably chip but :brick:

Fought for a while to get the sunroof motor out without dropping the headliner(0-10, would not recommend) only to find out the motor is fine(fine meaning working, those teeth tho?) and the cables are locked up... oh and the grease has become a solid
Only reason i decided to mess with it is that the sunroof seems to be like a smidge up and i dont want any leaks. Thoughts?

Update: made a PNP run this morning. SLC had a 97 that hasnt been around long so i figured i’d give it a shot and let the wife sleep in.
Expected it would be picked a little but most of the stuff i wanted was already gone.
Grabbed the front door seals and 2 windows seals i could get off without breaking then remembered that i want to build a cage on the hatch and a spare trim panel and seal for that would be great.
Also grabbed an ABS fuse, climate control fascia(mine is missing a tab and loose) and a spare set of under headlight body panels.
Not a terrible score but more importantly, i checked the sunroof on the donor and it was sitting about like mine and didnt seem to be leaking. I mean all the water is just going in the open doors but the sunroof is fine. Also pulled the motor off to test and sure enough the cables move freely on that one. Didnt feel the need to rip down the headliner and pull the unit as i feel mine is probably closed enough to leave until i feel like pulling the headliner.

Almost time to start hitting the trails and i wanted to make sure the 4R is prepared.
CV boots are torn and one is clicking in 4L but I found a pair of OE CVs to rebuild for 20 bucks on craigslist. Not too shabby.
Plan on rebooting and doing the boot slide mod on these but also redoing the ones on the 4R for spares.
Also started my rear window cage inspired by [MENTION=148349]cf_z_[/MENTION]
Had a big steel dog cage that i needed to scrap that looks like it’ll do the trick with a little modification.
Havent welded it in but got it cut to fit pretty well

Finally got the tig back up and running with some new gas, tunsten and cups.
That meant time to weld in the rear window cage. Got it all squared away and im very happy with the outcome just need to figure out how to trim/notch the rear trim panel to get it back in

Not sure about TX or UT but I think those forward parking lights are required when driving with lights on. If those lights can take a pwm for power I’ll make little module that will send pulsed 12v for dimmed parking lights when driving with lights on and then have a Sasquatch switch to send a full stream 12v. Same with reverse, my reverse lights are stock and they’re useless but the LED Might be blinding on the street for parallel parking or whatever.

Sorry its a novel but i've been in here talking to myself quite a bit.
Just trying to keep track of the progress as well as the pains and if it helps someone else, awesome!
So, the front bumper setup was never meant to be long term, i bought cheap LED pods knowing they were temporary and figured once i went to a plate bumper i'd upgrade to legit lights. They work fine and all now but i dont think they'll last.
they're from Amazon, i think i paid like 60 bucks for all 4 and maybe 15 or 20 for the harness which is actually pretty good with a fuse and relay so i'll probably keep that. Not sure about dimming them but that could definitely be cool as hell if it works, I've had zero issues with driving around before the lights were there. I've never had running lights being that i wired the turn signals to the runners immediately once running.
on the fog brackets, i dont have any pics aside from the two i posted. Its a shame because i've had a lot of people ask about them but i cant guarantee mine would fint other people's bumpers as my front end is completely rebuilt and the bumper doesnt exactly fit like factory.
it was a bit of a rush job as the wife had made plans and i didnt want to wait until the following weekend. just used a piece of angle iron straight off the lower bumper stud. drill the hole in it and bolted it on making sure the fog brackets met the underside. One didn't, so had to make an extension for that one but before that i measured the angle and cut a piece of straight 1x to meet the angle iron and the upper bolt. marked the spots for the fogs to drill for mounts, pulled them out, tacked the pieces together in the bumper then pulled them out and welded them the rest of the way. drilled the other holes, painted and installed.
Here is a bad pic with some hopefully helpful sketching to show the layout
the fogs fit in the holes so tight that i was able to bascially build the bracket around them
The reverse lights are cheap amazon bits as well, just 3 LEDS in an aluminum cylinder with a lens and a bolt on the back. Worked great bolted to the corner bolt of the bumper and aimed by bending the L bracket they came with. They are listed as waterproof, we'll see.

Its pretty rewarding once its running great afterward. I had a few rusty parts but also 2 motors to pull parts off of so that helped despite a lot of stuff not being compatible.

Stumbled upon your build this morning and its been fun to see your progress. It looks amazing and congrats for sticking it out. I live in Layton too. I'd love to see the runner in person maybe we could hit a trail. I just bought a stock runner in Feb and I've been on here trying to decide what I want to with it.

This is a great build, props to you for getting through all that engine stuff at the beginning. Im about to start a second build and there will be some pretty serious engine work involved too, Im excited.
