What do you all do to keep your turnbuckles snug?
Mine always loosen up after a while of driving around.
Is there a locknut method, or to use locktite, or ??

My 1st time using them. I bet some locktite or plumber's thread tape might work.

Like many of you, I have sought out to level out the back of the 4Runner using a simple sheet of plywood on some runners. I also wanted to add some storage to it while maintaining room to sleep in and didn't want to lose too much space, so behold the pictures below! Full disclosure: I do not have the time, skill, or resources to build this myself so I paid a pretty penny to have it done. It is based on and built by the same guy who did this: Building a 5th Gen (2010+) 4Runner Storage Platform – ADVENTURE TACO with a custom twist.

You can tie wrap one end. That's enough to stop rotation

Hey hey I didn't know you were on here as well! Indeed it does.
Turnbuckle pins, basically a cotter pin with velcro. Drill a small hole in the end of the turn buckle ends and slide the pin through. Normally you would split the cotter pin ends but with the velcro keeping it all in place there is no need. super simple and fast and easy to remove and re apply

Mark, If that's a picture of your turn buckles you might want to get a heavier type. Look closely at the number of threads and the size of the screw. This type of cheap metal buckle will strip out and fail in an accident or rollover.
I use a Larger turn buckle and don't have this problem.
Get a larger turn buckle and if the problem continues use a lock washer and a nut on both sides of the buckle. or get a NYLOC nut on both sides.
looking back I see the photo is of Drobs drawer system not yours. But hopefully he will read this also.

Thanks for the tips. I tried the locknut idea but it only works for one side of the buckle. The other side has a reverse thread and I haven’t been able to find a left hand threaded nut. In any case I’m going to get heavier turnbuckles, and then maybe try a Nyloc or cotter pin solution.

I love this forum! You all inspired a lot of my mods on my 4runner. Tried my hand at fabricobbling something together after reading this thread. Did a one drawer system so that I could fit my 50" 300 win mag in there diagonally. Works a treat. The drawer is absolutely the max size you could fit in there. Ill add "wings" to the side of it to make the whole rear area flush and flat as well as a center divider eventually in the drawer.
The top and drawer are hardwood ply, 30" drawer slides, and the frame is 1/2" square tubing welded together.

A little follow up on the Smittybuilt Vault.

Hitting the brakes hard / repetitively, like going down a steep hill off road, made it sound like a file cabinet drawer rolling.
It also had a really annoying squeak to it.
I dug through my loose change in the cup holder and jammed a mixture of quarters and dimes, and quarters and nickles between the gap in the drawer and the cabinet.
That solved all of the noise issues. It's quiet now.
Somewhere around the house here. we have plastic wedges. I just need to find them and will use those instead of loose change.

The box was getting annoying. It's just too big - filling the back with groceries is a PITA with that thing in there.
Those damn squeaking Turnbuckle Shackles were driving me crazy. Plastic shims solved the rolling file drawer sounds.
I started looking on Amazon for a duffel bag that would hold everything. Plus have handles on the ends that I could secure to the cargo floor.
Ordered and received this Rothco zippered GI duffel:

Pulled out the Smittybuilt Vault and put it in my shed. Then put everything I had in there minus the AR15's into the duffel.
I then had a freeking inspiration - Firearm Cable Locks!!!
Perfect for securing the duffel bag to the cargo tie downs. I have loads of them floating around the house.
Would have been perfect for the securing the Smittybuilt Vault as well.
Plus NO SQUEAKS!!!!

Just got my setup built last week and took it out for some testing over the weekend. Anyone have solution for a quick release alternative to turnbuckles? It would be nice to still maintain the functionality of the sliding platform once I’m at camp and make the whole drawer system extend. Just don’t want to always be messing with the 4 turnbuckles.
