I just bought my 1996 T4R with 195 K miles, and I'm not yet convinced that I'll even be keeping it.
In addition to the alternator problem, I also had the dreaded "check oil idiot light" come on, one day after I changed the oil to 10W-40 (to help pass smog test) and a new oil filter (from Auto Zone, not a genuine Toyota filter). I'll be changing the oil to 5W-30 AGAIN, and a Toyota oil filter.

1st step: change brushes on existing alternator. (new brushes just arrived.)

2nd step" if that does not work, I'll put in another alternator. (money is a factor).

If that does not work, I doubt I'll be keeping it. Heaven knows how bad the oil problem is. Even putting in a new oil pump may be more trouble than it's worth. I don't want to even think beyond that point. Unfortunately even dropping the oil pan, to clean the oil pick-up screen, on a T4R is a huge hassle, which includes removing the timing chain.

A real shame because when I test drove the T4R, it ran like a scalded cat.
