is it really that hard to find a 5 spd 4x4??
hey all.
great site! have gathered a lot of info already but i would like some more!
i'm about to sell my tacoma and get a 4runner. looking to get a 3rd gen 4runnner and discovered the one i want is considered the "holy grail" of these things. has to be a 5 spd... iv'e never owned an auto in 25 years of driving and don't see myself getting one in the near future. finding one of these in socal has been challenging. hopefully i can find one left as close to stock in original condition with low miles.
what am i looking to spend if i find a nice example in excellent condition? i don't need to find a great deal... just a great 4runner. got any leads?
thanks

no leads but I've found 2 in the last 2 years. They are out there especially here on the west coast. you have to be diligent and ready to pull the trigger when you find one because they disappear fast. Good luck. it is worth it IMO

I found two when I was looking, the one I wanted sold a week before I was ready to buy, since then I haven't seen any, Owell, got a 99 supercharged with 80k for 5500 not 100% what I wanted but I'm still in love with it

Here's one: 2000 TOYOTA 4RUNNER SR5 SPORT PKG 4X4 MANUAL TRD SUPERCHARGED*********
Lots of miles though.
They are rare. You might end up doing what I did. I never owned an automatic trans vehicle before either, but the auto behind the 3.4L in these 3rd gen 4Runners is a pretty d**n nice transmission and I've been happy with it.

Not tough to find, but tough to find within a reasonable price in decnet shape.
When I was shopping the few 5spd I found were beat, and price wasnt worth the work needed.. I didnt mind getting the auto.
But if you patient something will come up.

I spent over 3 months looking for the exact T4R that I wanted here in San Diego (4x4,5-spd,sport,3.4l,e-locker). When I found it, I jumped on it. It wasn't the best bargain, but I got what I wanted and I'm loving it! Good hunting!

I looked for a long time and found one, just keep an eye out and be ready to purchase it when you find one. I bet you can have what you want within 3 to 6 months if you watch your local CL postings, maybe longer if you are looking for low miles or a super bargain.

I looked almost everyday on CL, Autotrader, Ebay, Cars.com, and a bunch of dealerships for about 4 months to find a '98-00 Tacoma regular cab 4x4 4cyl 5 speed (which seems to be even rarer than what you are looking for). I finally found a great one a couple weeks ago for a fair price. I would have like to have spent about $1000 less, but I realized it could take a lot more time and I needed a pickup/new DD now, not in another 2 or 3 months.
When I finally found one that wasn't beat up, making weird noises, or leaking anything, I jumped on it. Your dream truck is out there, but if you are particular like me, you gotta be patient. Just for fun, I've still been looking online for them and I haven't seen any come up within 200 miles of me in the last 3 weeks. Good luck!

Hi,
Just a little on my story. After about four months of searching I came across my 98 5-speed 4x4 w/ locker . I was not really searching for one with a locker or 5speed but knew they were a kind of sought after. Well found this one 90 miles away from me. Went to check it out and bought it for $5200 with 168,000 miles on her. Truck was clean and adult driven and basically a one owner 4R. Some say I got a great deal on the truck.
A few months ago a member here on this site had an idenical one w/ locker with 111K for 7500 obo. I also saw one om cragilsit here in AZ w/ 131K 5speed 4x4 98 (no locker) for $5500 OBO. Lasted just one day.
Just some examples.
