3rd gen brakes input needed.
I'm getting ready to order new brakes all the way around on our new to us 4runner. I have read about the tundra swap, however I'm going to go stock replacment at this time. Rockauto has options listed economy, daily driver, and performance. What is everyone having luck with? Pads, rotors, drums and shoes are all getting done, so any ideas would be much appreciated.

I like Wagner thermoquiet pads. They seem to work well with a little dust. Akebano are also good pad wise.

+1 on ThermoQuiet ceramic pads. Think about upgrading the front to the Tundra calipers and rotors. There's a big difference in stopping power and a low chance of warping the new beefier rotors. I replaced the whole shebang for $266 and Rockauto.com accepted my 4runner caliper cores for the refund. I used the 199mm setup (caliper is S13WE).

If you drive in the city, you want the Tundra brake upgrade.

I just did the Tundra Brake upgrade last weekend. A HUGE difference.
Highly recommend doing it yourself.
After core refund, it cost me $350 for all new parts.

When its time for brakes on my Runner, I will definitely be doing the Tundra brake mod. You will spend almost as much for stock parts, just pick up a set of Calipers from a junkyard, that is the only additional cost over doing OEM Parts. You can get brand new loaded A-1 Cardone Calipers for 90 bucks each with pads included. New rotors are 66 each for High-performance from Raybestos. That's only 300 for the front, and there's not any good reason to replace the rear drums unless they are fouled by brake fluid or gear oil. Just have them turned for 15 bucks each at the local auto parts store. You are literally throwing money away if you don't get the rear drums checked out before you replace them.

I just picked up the Wagner Thermoquiet, should install them by the end of the weekend. Built in shims & don't require brake quiet grease, so that sold me on them. Amazon has them for just over $30, but I picked mine up from O'reilly's for $39.99 because I thought I'd install them within a day or two. Make sure to see if your rotors can still be turned ($10-$15 each), may save you some $$$, so keep that in mind if not doing the Tundra Brake Upgrade.
Rear drums poeple have said that non-OEM drums sometimes have fitment issues, may be able to use the seach button to dig up more info if going non-OEM route. I have the Autozone brand and they seem to work fine after 8k or so, FWIW.

+1 on turning the rear drums. The factory drums should last the life of the truck for most people. You can get the Toyota shoes from toyota of Dallas at discounted prices. If you decide to do the rear brakes, for $25ea you can buy new Aisin wheel cylinders and $8 for new hardware from rockauto.com I avoid the local parts stores anymore because I can save 50% at rockauto.com. It adds up fast.

I did the 2001 tundra 199mm caliber swap and it was a quick and easy direct bolt on upgrade. I did some towing this pass weekend, atv trip to the mountains and they performed great! All my vehicles have the wagner thermoquiet's, great pads.

i have seen a couple different threads on the tundra "big brake" upgrade. some say front calipers/rotors/pads from a 2001 any tundra, others say 2005 v8 4x4, if i do go that route, does anyone know the correct year, motor size, etc i need?
thanks,
tom

2000-2002 tundras used the smaller 199mm calipers. In 2003, the Tundra got the upgraded 231mm calipers, which is why you never see a 2003 and up Tundra with the smaller 16" wheels. Rotors, however, were the same from 2000 to 2006.

I ordered 2001 4x4 tundra calibers, pads and rotors. Parts guy did'nt ask motor size. The 199mm calibers don't require any mods to the backing plate, just bolt on and bleed the brakes, that's all i did. Reuse your caliber mounting bolts and brake line. In my case my 16" oem wheels would have to be modified to use the 2005+ 231mm calibers, which are bigger, also with these 231 calibers you have to modify your backing plates. My plan was to upgrade from the 199mm calibers/pads to the 231mm/pads when i upgrade my wheels, from what i've read here the rotors are the same, but i'm happy with the 199mm's so i'm thinking i'll just keep'em. I'm a newbie here and to 4runners so if anybody has any corrections please chime in. Madbomber beat me to it, thanks for clearing up the year info!

There was a TSB for the 00-02 Tundras which updated the 199mm calipers to 231mm,17" wheels were not required. Some 03+ Tundras came with 16" steel wheels, like my parts department's 2005 standard cab.
