knocking noise! i don't know where it's coming from. help? suggestions?
i have a knocking noise that isn't very loud but is definitely audible. i have been to 4 places trying to find out what it is. 3 places told me it was either the flex plate or torque converter so i had the transmission pulled to check and there is nothing wrong with anything in the transmission. another place told me it is either a rod knock or the wrist pin. i kind of believe that, however, the noise isn't loud enough that i think its a rod knock; the wrist pin is more reasonable since the piston would just be bouncing up and down. there are a couple of reasons i think it could possibly be neither one. when it is not in gear the noise is not there, you can only hear it when its in gear. when you start driving you can only hear it in first gear, so when you start moving the noise seems to disappear until i come to almost a complete stop. the engine also has to be heated up to hear it, in the mornings, or anytime after it has cooled down, you cant hear the noise. i'm having a hard time deciding what to do with this because i dont have the money to spend on checking things that arent the problem. does anybody have any suggestions on what this could be? please help!!
let me know if you guys find out what is causing the noise in yours it would be much appreciated. i dont want to replace the whole motor if i dont have to
