Cruise control issues? 96 SR5

ok so while im cruising along i can turn the cruise on and the relay clicks and kicks on but no matter how many times i push the stick to set the cruise it doesnt come on.
the signal is good all the way to the throttle actuator but it still wont engage, is it common for these units to go out? and does anyone have one they want to sell.

Do you have a manual transmission?

My manual 4runner would lose cruise control occasionally because the clutch pedal bushings were worn and the clutch would be depressed enough to fool the cruise control.

Anytime my cruise control wouldn't engage, I would slide my foot under my clutch pedal, pull up slightly and then cruiser control would work.

Is the cruise control cable stretched beyond the stroke of the CC actuator? Maybe you just need to adjust the cable.
