Will a CB mount hold a flag for the dunes?

I'll be heading out to glamis next month and to drive any vehicle out there I need to have a flag for the dunes. I'm wondering if a CB antenna mount that goes in between the tail light and rear hatch will hold up without any issues. I never had one so not sure as to how well it'll hold up since it's only attached by the 2 screws.

I would think it would although I'm not sure if the hole diameters are the same. I can't think of how else to really do it unless you had an aftermarket bumper you could drill /attach to. The minimum height from ground to flag tip is 8' so should only need a few feet of whip to make 8 feet, so the bracket should have the strength to hold it. But you might want to get one of the ones from toytec not those cheapie aluminum ones just to be safe... those look pretty beef.

P.S. I miss the dunes, I used to live in SD and went to Gordon's Well, Superstition, Ocotillo, and Glamis all the time. My friends still live down there so I make it down every year or so for a trip. Love it... have fun!

The one that Toytec offers is the Outdoor Logic one, I believe. CBI makes one for the "ditch" between hood/windshield that will put the antenna in basically a mirrored spot from the FM antenna. It's also about $20 cheaper.... both appear to be comparable in quality.

Good option... basically anything with more beef than those little aluminum or thin steel ones that come with most CB antennas. Whip flags are significantly heavier and stiffer than CB antennas. Putting in on the hood/fender area would also put it up higher therefore requiring an even shorter whip.
 
Good point, I'd stay away from the hood area, just in case it fails you avoid the windshield. We don't have any flag-required dune areas (or any other public wheeling areas lol) here in AL, so I'm not that familiar with the flags. Maybe a clamp type mount for a roof rack? I've seen CB antenna mounts that are welded to Vise-grips (literally) in a couple truck stops. Always wanted to visit Glamis, unfortunately I don't have my Honda 450R anymore lol
 
I already have the CBI ditch mounts for the lights. So I can put up there any way. So my next thought was the CB antenna mount. I'm sure the steel bracket will hold up to the fast but not sure if the way is mounted will up to it. It's only the 2 bolts and with the bumps and whatever else I come a cross if the 2 screws will hold up to the abuse.
 
I just use electrical tape and zip ties and attach it to my Bajarack . Works great and it puts it up even higher. Kinda redneck but it works awesome.

Ha ha i have done something like that with ju precious truck aswell. I put the spare wheel and tired I. My bed tied it down and screwed the flag through one of the lug holes.

I just removed my rack and sold it. So I can even do that now. I got some metal so I'm going to build a lil bracket and see how that works. I'll post it up as I go.
 
So I ended up making some brackets so we'll see how it'll hold up when next month when I take it out. I ended up making 2 do them one for each side. I might weld some gussets for extra strength just to be on the safe side.





 
I've used my cheap cb mount between the taillight and tailgate down next to the bumper for a flag a couple of times and have left it there for that few times I might need it-rarely. It is held on by 4 screws and is shorter than the cbi/odl version. My cb antenna is mounted elsewhere. So far okay.

I use it a few times a year but it'll sure help those few times I do need it. Does it flex a bit when u have the flag whipping around or is it pretty rigid?

I can't possibly drive it AND watch for flex! :D

I wouldn't be surprised if it does flex some, but I haven't had any loose screws (there, anyway) or problems for the couple of times I've put the flag on.

EDIT: I attached the flag to the bracket and wiggled it good for a short bit (it's cold, dangit). Yep, it flexes where the bracket comes away from the truck and at the other bend as well. The body where it is attached does not visually appear to be flexing but I would assume something is happening there too. All 4 screws are tight and clearance between it and the tailgate has not noticeably changed. Most of it does seem to be in the bends of the bracket that are free of the body. When driving it I tethered the flag to the rack as well, to chill out the flex so it wouldn't keep beating on the truck....that would also mean less flex at the bracket.

you can "ghost ride the whip" ha ha
i did the same thing where i wiggled it and on mine it flexes after the bend. i was debating on welding some gussets to re-enforce it. but we shall see how it holds up.
