You are going to off-road? With that?

So I asked a coworker to weld on some sliders for me. He looked at me and says, "you know what those are for right? Why would you off-road with that."
When he think of offroads he think of jeeps and old Toyotas fj. I have a 1999 sr5, hopefully get lockers in the rear soon and 2" lift.
Anyone else get weird looks when you tell people your plans or you off-road with your 4runner?

Can't tell if troll or not. I smoke Jeeps on the trail all day long though ... tell him that. Tell him Absalom smokes jeeps on the trail all day long.
 
He don't off road, he do own a raider for hunting. It didnt bother me just surprise me considering he does a lot of fab work.
 
And you also tell him that right before Absalom smokes them on the trail—he skins them first and fashions their dirty lifeless hides into camp-hats to keep warm at nite...

Haha that is classic, I will make sure to show this to the jeep owners in the shop.

Couple months ago, going up, near the top of Pucker Pass in Moab. Brolifted Silverado coming down passes me and "warns" that "It's pretty steep up ahaid, you might not make it."

And my runner is.. well look below!

Thought about going off but just said "I'll be fine" and he parted with "Hope you don't break anything".

It was telling that he thought so much of Pucker Pass that he even needed to say something when in reality it's nothing but a nice scenig trail. The "Pucker" part is maybe a 3/10. Probably the worst thing he's ever done :D
 
I had my friend pretty much say the exact same thing to me. She drives an Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon and thinks the 4Runner can't offroad. Her boyfriend thinks his 94 Ranger will do better on the trails than the 4Runner. Hopefully we can hit the trails soon and I can show what she can do.
 
I have a good friend who has a built Jeep he runs a few times a year at the local off-road park. The park is pretty wild and his Jeep does real well. He is a real sharp guy, a professional mechanic, and knows off-roading. The first time we went out in my 4Runner exploring some forest service roads he was amazed at how well it did and the places it would go, even in 2WD (with LSD). When we go out now, to some remote place in the National Forest, he always says, 'We'll be fine. This is a 4Runner.'

Whenever I run across some guys on ATVs in the forest, they always give me a funny look or make some comment like 'it's pretty tough back there', and it usually is - the forest trails around here are narrow, rocky, and terribly brushy (usually not enough soil for deep mud). So far, in over 500 miles of exploring forest service roads (including abandoned ones that I 'ended up' on), I've never broken anything on the trail, not even a flat tire (but then again, I'm careful and sane).

Had to go lookup Long Canyon on TD, even they rate it at 2/2. WTF indeed. I've never been, it does look like a beautiful run.
 
I used to get this look Everytime I went offroad. My 4runner is practically stock with a mild lift and after a few trips down trails with my chevy and jeep lover friends at school, and after getting them unstuck more than I can count. I'm usually the one they call now for help to get them out of a mud hole.
 
This is the video I show people when I get "that" look. Not my truck, but a great example I think of what our trucks can do.

Which video?

To be totally honest, I am a real newbie when it comes to offroad driving. I've done it many times on tame terrain and a couple times on some tough stuff. I've always thought Jeeps were really good platforms, with the short wheel base, solid axle up front, relatively light weight, etc. With the same driver, are our 3rd gens really a match to, or superior to, many of the Jeep platforms? Of course, let's assume equal mods, or equal money spent on mods.

jeeps are great platforms. but Ive heard reliability is a concern. the early models didn't offer any type of locker or traction control besides the jeep rubicon. and not to mention they are extremely uncomfortable and not practical for everyday use. Even the new 4 door wrangler unlimiteds are torture for passengers. So what I'm saying is, If you want a do everything off-road vehicle get a 4runner. if you want something that's capable and you can take on trails and not worry about beating it up get a used jeep. I think the Jeep Cherokee yjs are the best platform. not to mention they have 4 doors and a trunk.
