What's going on 3rd gen runner family! I have a 2002 4runner 3.4 4wd what's the safest transmission fluid to use? i don't care if it's more on the expensive side i just need to protect my investment. Thanks!

Why not OEM? Meets all lubrication requirements of the trans, and IS the fluid of choice of the manufacturer, so to me it only makes sense. You're going to pay a little more, but it's not too bad. Same with coolant.

Or, visit your local dealer. I changed mine a few months ago and paid $20 a gallon.

I would personally recommend Mobil1 Synthetic Transmission fluid. I have used it for the past 6 years and although expensive, it provides outstanding lubrication and protection. Even when I "drain and fill" every six months or so, the fluid comes out looking new. Together with a transmission cooler, I think you will be pleased. Mobil1 is not inexpensive but I trust my rig to it in the engine and transmission. I have 260K on my ride and it is the ORIGINAL transmission and engine.

I personally like Mobile1 I've been using it in my engines for the past 8 years but just haven't heard enough about them in the tranny department. Thanks!

Assuming you are running an automatic transmission and not a manual? Redline MT-90 seems to be the fluid of choice for us with manual transmissions.

110,000 miles on WallyWorld full synth Super Tech trans fluid
I have 263K on my ride and it is the ORIGINAL transmission and engine where I've driven it the last 110K while doing 1 fluid/filter change (along with external cooler, magnefine filter & bypass) 110k ago then simple drain/fills every 30k with Super Tech DEXRON VI Automatic Transmission Fluid, 1 qt - Walmart.com which is designed specifically for Toyo products (among others) at about $4.5/qt with ZERO issues. Luck! :cowboy:
PS: the Magnefine can Really help longevity too at only $12.

I absolutely recommend MT-90 for the manual transmission. When I bought my truck it had this shit GL4 stuff in it and my 2nd gear would grind on medium speed shifting and it would never get into gear "nicely". I put in MT90 GL5 fluid and man.. What a difference. Smooth as butter shifting.

I am using all Redline fluids for my "new" 2001 4Runner including ATF, engine oil, and brake fluid. I have done a lot of research and Redline is hard to beat. Their products are not that much more expensive than other products mentioned here.

I bought a B&M 70264 and a magnafine filter but a little hesitant to install as i've read in some threads on here that if you're not towing you're better of with just getting a new radiator to be safe from pink milkshake.
What i'm thinking of is to installing the new radiator with a trans temp gauge to monitor temp for a little while than install the cooler to see if it makes any difference.
Also i've even heard some mentioning worries about fluid temp being too cold. Please let me know what's your take on that.

More like "exchanging" rather than flushing.
Can take to a place with a T-Tech or similar machine and they use the transmissions pump to just slowly push new fluid in and the old fluid out until you see nothing but new fresh fluid coming out.
This pushes most of the old fluid out.
Best to have a few extra quarts also.

I drained it then dropped the pan... I cleaned the little magnets on the bottom of the pan and pulled the filter out and cleaned that as well. I swapped fluids and used Amsoil ATF. My runner runs great, besides my bad knock sensors (recently)... Did this around 199k and she currently has 264K right now. Runs like a champ. I vote amsoil, yes it is somewhat expensive, but I have gone 65K miles on it so far and no issues whatsoever. Oh BTW I used FIPG for the trans pan and no leaks here.
