285x75x16 clearance in the rear

Hello Everyone,

I have searched quite a bit about the 285x75x16 tires and if they will fit a 1997 Toyota 4runner. I currently have Camburg UCA's with adjustable Bilstein 5100 front and back. So with the UCA's It seems that the 285x75x16 mostly fits in the front and clear the UCAs... I still have a bit rubbing on the frame while turning sharp. But I don't think it's a big deal yet.... UNLESS you all say I HAVE to upgrade my wheels.

All of the threads I have researched all talk about clearance of the tires in the front. I am wondering if the 285x75x16 will fit in the rear and will clear the rear fenders while fully flexed. I am worried the tires will hit the fenders in the rear. Will I HAVE TO upgrade the suspension lift in the rear to make the tires fit? I posted photos of the flexing with my stock tires fully flexed. Plus a photo of how Mayhem currently sits.

Please let me know, thank you!

Jon

You should be fine. I ran that tire size on stock wheels, no spacers, no bump stop extensions with not much issue. You will get a little rub on the back bumper and thats about it. I ran 305's also and they are almost an inch wider and still cleared the inside of the fender.

Now with my 1.5" body lift and 3" lowered rear bump stops it has enough clearance for 35's.

mine rubs the back mud flap pretty bad, almost enough to stop the runner in its tracks when im fully flexed. i have stock fj wheels and no spacers. everywhere else it tucks nice.

This is where I also get the rub. I had to remove my limited flare dog leg in this location.

Are those with 17" wheels? Is it 285x75x17? I wonder if the 16" will give a little more clearance.

Dumb question:. Can you put a 1.5" body lift only in the rear? Or will I have to do the 1.5" body lift front and back?I have the front lifted already.

no they are 16s, 285x75x16. you could just extend the bumpstop. thats most likely what i will be doing. i notice you dont have the mudflaps, so you shouldnt have the same problem i have. have you flexed it out on the bigger tires yet?

That's a really good idea. What size bumpstops do you recommend?

I haven't flexed out the runner with the new setup yet. I am going to look for some big curbs today to try. I'm in the city, and I don't know many areas with good curbs. Guess it's time to explore the city for some big curbs!

With your current coil I would not lower bump stops. You should be fine and all that would do is limit up travel. Your most likely only going to rub at the rear bumper near flap or limited flare. Up travel will not stop this rub at this location.

oh not sure, im still researching that. ill let you know when i figure it out. you can also trim the bumper where it hits, if it hits, that would be the best option since you dont lose up travel you would with an extended bumpstop. you gotta see if it hits and where first tho

I take it you are not willing to trim or hammer anything. You'll be fine if it's a street rig only, but if you offroad you'll rub. Easiest way to fix this is bump stops or body lift. Just flex it out and extend the bumps 1/2" past the point that you start to rub. You'll probably rub more in the front anyway so a BL might be the best option if you don't want to modify anything.
