I have read from other reviewers that the lower end models work good for a year or two, then they start to diminish in performance. I had a Blackbox G1W for 2 years, and in November, it started to stop recording at its own will and do all sorts of funky things.
I researched and narrowed it down to a Vantrue N2. The reviews across the board were positive, and Uber drivers like it especially because of the rear facing camera.
For my purposes, I wanted reliability, front and rear facing camera and decent video quality (enough to distinguish license plates which this does). The N2 checks these boxes and didn't set me back that much. I bought my N2 from Amazon during a promotion period with a warranty. I've had it for close to two months and it's working perfect, even in frigid temps (4-5* F).
I did come across other higher-end cameras (BlackVue) that offered Wifi connectivity, higher frames per second and other goodies, which was tempting, but I can't justify spending $300+ on a dash cam. Given that dash cams haven't been around that long, they are still going through growth pains. I'd give it another 3-4 years before they refine them.
