My brother and I rebuilt a 2003 Tocuma with a bad frame. We redid it. We I think had 6k or so for everything. We even painted it. Good condition 1st gens are going 10 to 12k around here. I sold my 1998 sr5 5 speed in 2009 to Toyota for 15k. When I paid 12k for it in 2001. So with Alaska I say be several thousand more because it's just how it is.

If the body and chassis are decent with some maintenance records. It's probably worth that. I would throughly check it out though. Making sure it's not boring oil or using coolant. You know what to look for...

Who are we to say you can't get rid of your 4Runner? I love mine but at the end of the day it's just a vehicle. There will come a point in time that it will either be too expensive to maintain or not worth the effort.

I have a co-worker that had a Tundra around that year and loved it. Dependable, rugged and larger bed than a Tacoma. Good 4WD system but it is a bit heavier and a little thirstier when it comes to gas if that matters at all. The V8 makes it great for hauling and towing. I don't know of any specific items to look out for when buying one.
