rear axle housing

My son was hit in my 96 4runner and it appears not only is the left rear axle bent, but the axle housing is also bent. Mechanic says toyota doesn't make them anymore and his parts service says the nearest is 500 miles away. Anyone out there with experience on a rear axle housing?? Thanks!

Just get one from pick-n-pull that doesn't have rear end damage

Make sure it matches your current gear ratio - or you can swap the 3rd member (and wheel cylinders, if needed). There were some minor differences through the years (mostly '01/'02 compared to '96-'00) so pay attention to that too - brake line brackets and wheel bearings are the main differences.

I think the axle housing are similar from 1996 to 2002. Now there is difference with the e lockers vs non e-locker as the 3 members gasket mating surfacesare different. I am trying to recall if any of the 01 and 02 have different brackets welded on the housing... I am thinking they do not, However, not 100% on that one.

Have you thought about reaching out to local auto restoration or customization shops? Or, sometimes, you can find used parts in good condition at local salvage yards.

If your going to go the route of buying a new axle housing check out this seller named "RUST FREE TOYOTA PARTS" on ebay. I guess he is a regular pick n puller in the state of AZ he always has 1st gen tacoma and 4runner axle housings for sale as well as the axles too. Both e-locker and non. The shipping price is actually decent too only 120 bucks ish to ship it

I may go that route which brings up the following question: Are all axle housings the same for the 4wd '96? I have ABS as well as the factory rear locker.

Thanks!

What others have written above answers your question, but to summarize you will need a e-locker axle housing from 96-00 with abs, and axle shaft(s), not knowing the engine we can only guess what 3rd member is in it, likely 4.30ratio if its a v6 with elocker, axle code is on the VIN tag, and it is stamped on the ring gear, but yours should be reusable. You can check axle shafts for runout by rolling the shaft part on a perfectly flat table surface. You will want to replace seals, and maybe bearings if it is high milage at this time, you will want someone with the proper tools, press and specific experience with this specific bearing replacement job or they WILL make a mistake and she'll leak.
