Car moves forward when in neutral…

Just noticed it today. No it’s not like when in drive it just has a little power and moves even up a small hill. Trans f*ked?

That would be a failed torque converter if automatic transmission

Your shift linkage is probably out of adjustment. Chock your wheels/set parking brake, shift transmission into neutral, loosen the nut on the linkage at the transmission shift lever, move the lever one click out then one click back (putting it out of neutral then back to neutral), then tighten the nut. If that doesn’t fix your issue then you have a problem with the manual valve in the transmission.

A failed torque converter will not affect gear selection.

These are all symptoms of a TC issue:

Is your idle possibility to high? Mostly if the torque convertor is bad it will Stall at a stop sign or light because it's at stuck in locked position. Other Symptoms is noise coming out of it and if it got real hot the internal fins will warp and it will act like brakes are stuck on because the fluid can flow as effectively as it supposed to from the heat damage.

Am I missing something? Didn’t OP say he’s in neutral and the vehicle is moving under power?

Correct. Other gears all work as they should. It’s also intermittent… in 4-5 starts today it happened 2x. The other 2-3 it was actually neutral not moving at all.

Easiest thing to check is the shift linkage. You'll know right away if it is the problem.

Most likely it's linkage. I just explained what you see when torque convertor bad. Which I don't think it is at all. Maybe I should have been clearer. Thanks to @badluck for pointing out I didn't clarify. Will correct the post.

Go under car where the shifter is, you can see the lever coming out of the black rubber boot on the right of pic (the front boot) and links with a nut to the rod that moves the transmission shift lever on the actual transmission. You may want to make a witness mark for that nut (right side of pic) so you know where it was. Loosen it and do what Bad Luck said above. If the lever out of the boot is all floppy then you could replace the shifter bushings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCHSRcq-LP8

How loose if the shifter handle? Might be a great time to replace the rod bushing so the linkage is 100% tight. Before the new bushings, my shifter engaged pretty sloppy.
