What the Hell is this!?

So I was cleaning sand out of my runner and noticed some wire I had never noticed before. Pulled it up and found this thing? It was under the carpet right where you feet would be sitting in the back. It says it’s from what looks like 1996 so I’d assume it’s original to the car? Any idea what this is? Don’t feel like chasing that wire and ripping out my carpet

it has something to do with Colorado on it, so I'd assume it's not OEM but dealer installed, maybe a receiver for a security system or something.

If you Google the patent number it says it's a type of planar antenna. Maybe something for the door locks from the remote opener??? I don't think it's for the radio unless you have a radio that has a backseat earphone setup. Maybe it's the receiver antenna for the rear window control on the remote???

I have never seen that before, but I don't usually remove the carpets. Very odd that it was in the rear, I would assume it's aftermarket.

What’s the other end attached to? Looks like an antenna for something.

No idea what it’s attached to cause I didn’t feel like taking the carpet up. It says May 7th 1996 on it. I know the car was built in 4/96 so I guess maybe a dealer option like someone said? I just don’t why anything having to do with the antenna would be headed towards the back of the car

Clearly its treasure! looks kinda sketchy though. Sure its nothing to worry about, but dodgy wiring always spooks me on any vehicle.

If it's under the carpet I doubt it's a dealer option. Like I said before, if you Google the patent number it says it's a planar antenna. Antennas like this are receivers for remote control devices, like your door locks. They are also embedded in the side glass for your radio.

I would just put it back where it was. Don't break what isn't broken and don't rock the boat.

It's a planar antenna. I've seen them used for radios, sometimes for alarms. They are used instead of glass antennas. Don't remember ever seeing one in a 4Runner, but I would bet if you trace the wires they go to the radio area.

Yeah exactly dont touch what isn’t broken. When I do my sound deadening project I’ll trace it just to satisfy my curiosity but not gonna mess with it beyond seeing where it goes. Electrical gremlins are no fun

Oh here we go...

Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries.

lolol

The VIP system (again dealer / port install) for the 80 series had a wire running up the driver's B pillar for the antenna, which btw was not that good. Maybe it was different for the 3rd gen?

I haven’t a clue. But dealers have been known to put in disabling devices on vehicles in the event that the buyer defaults on their loan. This was the first thing that crossed my mind.
