brake booster

Hello all, Its been a while but I have a question. 6 years later my daughter is still driving her 99 limited. Apparently she has a bad brake booster. And while checking it out there is a fluid leak from master cylinder. You know these crappy toyotas. Only a quarter of a century and 280k miles and already falling apart.

The question: New or junkyard? Found the OEM for around $600. Local yard has 3 but of course they are 20+ years old. I know boosters last a long time but is it worth putting a 2 decade old one in?

Thanks

That's would be your call. It's either going to work or go bad again if used. Even if you put it in and it's good it could fall. That's just a risk with parts.

Assuming most daughters wouldn't know how to handle a brake component failure while driving. So why risk putting a 20+ year used one back in?

I vote for getting a new one.

That's a very good point. Probably wouldn't realize the booster went out and you have to mash the brake to stop.

Might be good to have the e brake fully functional incase you have use it to stop as well...

Yep……if reasonably affordable would go factory new with brake system component when possible especially being daughter’s daily, ex-wife maybe different story!

thanks all. I pretty much agree. Getting my daughter to come off the money is the hard part. And of course she will listen to others more than dear old dad

Ah. Yup brakes are important and owning vehicles are money pits. One way or the other they will learn...
