Flashing 4WD indicator light
Had it in 4wd to make it easy getting out of my snow covered parking lot this morning, then tried to shift out of 4wd by pressing the button and the indicator lights on the dash keep flashing...
Any ideas?

just keep driving and it should pop out if not do the forward reverse forward reverse thing for a minute and if that doesn't work just keep driving it till it pops out then change your fluids in the t-case and diffs.
some times it takes a while for it to pop out, if it's the push button on the lever your fine for driving on dry pavement in that mode of 4x4

You could have a faulty 4WD transfer switch/sensor.
Check out my thread on yotatech to troubleshoot it if you can't get it to come out of 4WD limbo mode;
4WD won't disengage on 99 4Runner LTD - YotaTech Forums

if none of that ^ works try shifting your transfer case. Put it neutral, then shift from 4hi to 4lo back to 4HI.

Yeah I've book marked that thread and was going to run through it on my truck this summer , lucky it's been kicking in and out after a few miles before I really need it, but something is wrong , but don't feel an fix is needed atm .
Great work on that thread btw! So happy it's on the multi mode case.as well !
OP :
Try the fixes in order of cost , Not sure of the.sensors or actuators but fluid should be like 15-20 bucks for all of it and most likely needs to be done anyways , or just do it all run the diagnostic shown in the linked thread replace parts as needed and do the fluid while your there

I realize it is a bit daunting to just start reading it, but my man can impart some serious knowledge on you & save you some serious money. If you are having this problem and do not read this post then you might as well be throwing your money up your butt.
It took me $55 for the sensor, and 10 minutes to change it out. I guarantee I would have been charged a minimum of $100 to just diagnose the problem somewhere else. They probably would have tried to get me to change something out that would have cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars. (Just see some of the other stories on that thread).
My problem in particular was that my light was blinking and I was stuck in 4WDHL. The part # I changed out was 84222-35070. I have a 2000 but I know that is the part # for a 99 also. Maybe all 3rd gens.
Also I have to tell you I emailed Doug personally a couple of times with questions bc I'm a novice, and he couldn't have been more helpful. I say DOUG 4 PRESIDENT.
Here is a picture of the sensor location:
"The sensor on the front differential is close to the ADD can on the differential. It is just to the passenger side of the top center of the diff. There should be a small wire harness going down to it with the plugin."

So I followed the thread that Doug posted over on yotatech and ran into a problem. The front diff sensor he replaced (part #84222-35070) fits 4runners manufactured up until 8/2000. Mine was made in 11/2000 so that sensor doesn't work for me. I went to the local dealership and that's what they told me. Apparently there are two sensors on the '01 plus models that do the same job. I was able to get the part numbers and a diagram of where they go. It isn't very help full and I was hoping someone on here knows more info than I do and can help me.
Sensor #1 is part #84222-12010
#2 is part #84222-35121

Wow.. amazing. I am in the same position.
I have an 02 Sport, my 4WD light is flashing. I found and replaced a bad transfer switch at the back on the transfer case but my light is still flashing. I'm looking now to try to find the front switches.. I think they're the same one you're trying to find. I agree, that diagram isn't very helpful.
Can anyone point me in the correct location of the front switches?

I believe both of the switches are on the back of the transfer case, but I'm not entirely sure.

Look at Josh's picture up above even though it is upside down. You just need to remove the front skid plate and then look over the front axle by laying under the 4Runner behind the front axle on the driver's side.

no lights
So i have a little bit different problem. My 4wd lights come on flashing and then stay on green when I push the 4wd button, so all is well in that position. However, when i shift the lever to H4L the orange center diff light doesn't come one. Also, if I depressed the 4wd button, the lights turn off and I am back in 2wd I believe, even though the lever is still in 4HL. I thought there might be something wrong with the center diff lock but I can shift it into L4L (no lights come on either) and it definitely engages.

Hi All, apologies if this is a known problem but for some reason my 4wd and diff lock light stays blinking all the time. I must have pressed it by mistake now I cannot get it off! Anyone help please? I have the 2002 3400 V6 4 runner. The vehicle is not in 4wd but the light is always flashing. I have tried to change 4lo-4hi in N and P but still it is there.
Cheers

Have you read through the whole thread yet? I'm working on solving this problem on my '01. The thread on yotatech that it linked a couple of posts up is really helpful. If you see the diagram I put up, I'm replacing the second sensor today (marked no. 2 on the diagram). I already replaced the no.1 sensor and I believe they both affect the indicator lights.
I'll update when I get the sensor in.
