You could have a faulty 4WD transfer switch/sensor.
Check out my thread on yotatech to troubleshoot it if you can't get it to come out of 4WD limbo mode;

Can anyone point me in the correct location of the front switches?
Hi All, apologies if this is a known problem but for some reason my 4wd and diff lock light stays blinking all the time. I must have pressed it by mistake now I cannot get it off! Anyone help please? I have the 2002 3400 V6 4 runner. The vehicle is not in 4wd but the light is always flashing. I have tried to change 4lo-4hi in N and P but still it is there.
Cheers

Thanks, look like I will go for the sensor. If I can find one! :fishing:
Sorry to bring thread back from a year ago, but I'm still having the same problem. I have read completely through the thread on Yotatech linked in the first few posts on this thread. After reading I have discovered that the front differential sensor discussed in the Yotatech thread isn't on the '01 or '02 models. To date I have replaced both switches located on the rear of the transfer case and today I cleaned all electrical contacts I could find on both the front differential and the transfer case. My 4wd lights on the dash continue to blink, including the center differential light (orange circle in the center). I am at a loss for what to try next. I can engage the low range gears in the transfer case, which I assume you can't do in w/o 4wd engaged, but the lights still blink and pressing the center differential lock button does nothing. Anyone out there have any ideas?
Does the VSC system have any effect on the 4wd system?
Thanks,
