leaking transfer case

My 96 mt, 2.7 transfer case is leaking from the front input. I'm having a hard time finding parts or a rebuild kit.

I saw a post about a Rock-Auto rebuild kit so I looked it up and its calling it an R100. Not sure what to think about that. Parts-geek shows some seals but no bearings. I believe the J-shift is a VF2A. Looking for some guidance on parts or rebuilt units. What are folks doing with these? Mine just hit 285k.

When I resealed the my transfer case. I just bought the front seal off of Toyota. Mostly they are not crazy expensive. :-) Granted, there maybe some options. Rock auto has it listed as a transfer input seal with 3 options if you wish to go that route as well. :-)

I have only really seen the input and output seals leak so far. I am sure the chain cover seal can seep too but I would imagine the transfer case would have to get really hot to cause that to leak like running low or out of gear grease.


So your thinking the bearing input is bad? I know I would test that before replacing it. Its possible because of the age now, its just the oil seal ... :-)

@D'arce I put in characteristics I believe are correct search by VIN if not. TOYOTA 4RUNNERRZN185L-GKMSKA - POWERTRAIN-CHASSIS - TRANSFER CASE EXTENSION HOUSING | Japan Parts EU
I take OE numbers and cross reference to suppliers Roc has their info tab.
285k is not bearing needing milage if T/C been kept full or near it under most use conditions.
Seals weakest link judge bearings when TC out. How I'd roll.

I have only had this truck for 15k miles or so. All the fluids were full, just filthy.

I tend to agree with you all that the seals are aged for sure. I will find out hopefully this weekend what exactly is leaking and just hope its not a bearing.

If its just coming from the front output, there is no need to pull the case. Just remove the front drive line, remove the flange, pull the old seal, replace...

Probably a good idea to drain the case before pulling the seal.

I had to do the rear output on mine years ago, removing the flange bolt was probably the hardest part.

The only problem is, the guy said it was coming from the "input" so I assumed he was seeing gear oil leaking from the bottom area of the mating of the transmission and transfer case.

You could ban-aid it with this stuff, it worked well fixing a small leak on my crawl box.
