Soft brake pedal 3rd gen t4r

Hey all,

I’ve been chasing down a very soft brake pedal for as long as I’ve Owen’s my 96 limited t4r. To give a List of the things I have done to try and tackle the issue I have done
Tundra brake calipers pads and rotors

New oem rebuilt brake booster

New oem brake master cylinder

I’ve done a high pressure bleed a couple times

If anyone could shed some light onto my parts cannon problem that would be great, I’m thinking it’s possible there is air in my abs module. thanks t4r

When you doing the bleeding, did you do the rear brakes? You don't mention the rear set of brakes at all.
Did you bleed the LSPV last of all? They're known for collecting dirt/crud, and air.

Just checking. After all, the rear brakes are bled first, and the LSPV last. Any of them can have air in them, after all. Heck, for all I know, you may have a rear axle seal leak, and the the rear shoes need replacing. I had that, and once I got them replaced (I hate drum brakes!) it was night and day. The pedal firmed up, and the whole brake system felt like a new one.

Anywho, good luck to you!
Pat☺

There is no LSPV on ABS equipped 3rd gens, only on non-ABS models.

The bleed procedure for '96-'00 4Runners is very specific:

First, note the unusual master cylinder procedure - this sets the front/rear fluid balance system (extra thing on the side of the master cylinder) in the correct location for operation. If this is not done correctly, this will cause poor brake pedal feel and poor brake performance.

THEN, you need to bleed in the correct order or it will mess that system up.

THEN, it is very easy to get air trapped in the ABS system, and activating the ABS actuators requires specific (and long out of production) SSTs from Toyota.

After you get the pedal OK with the above procedure, find some dirt and get the ABS system to activate, then bleed again. It might take a few tries, but then you'll have good (for a '90's SUV) brakes.

Typically a soft pedal means air is somewhere in the system.

Besides the obvious pads-shoes does this mean a complete drain-fill of brake fluid also? That made mine good as new - firmish.

You could also get 4 tires up in the air and use 4x4 in drive to activate abs

Yes +1 soft means air or maladjusted rear brake drums. I done two different tundra caliper upgrades and it can be tough at times to get the air all out. Especially if you run the brake system out of fluid. Its best to keep the fluid in the system and just cap off the lines when changing the calipers..
