DENSO MAF sensor discontinued for 98T4R
I've tried a couple OEM parts places and the say the MAF sensor for my 98 Limited has been discontinued, that I'd have to source it after market. Need some advice on which might be a reliable after market brand. Thanks...

I feel your pain since I have the same year and expect to need one eventually too. From what I've read, I would not trust any after market MAF. Better to go the used OEM route on eBay for about $100. Most sellers will accept returns if it doesn't work. If someone comes up with an aftermarket one that works, I'd be interested.

If you have the big round sensor there are threads to convert over to the newer style sensor.

This topic has been discussed before in some other fourms and I've read all of them related to this. I also have a 1998 with 203K on it and will probably need to replace mine eventually too. The consensus IMO for this is to do the 2000+ MAF & airbox swap along with the MAF connector re-pin. There are some great detailed fourms on here about it. If you don't know the 2000+ style maf are separate from the tube. There is two screws holding them into the tube thats on the air box. If you get a 2000+ airbox and the maf + the wiring re pin that would be your solution to this. The newer style maf sensor that the 2000+ uses is not discontinued or anything and is still widely availble. You can get a brand new one on RockAuto for $85. You have a choice of either sourcing a newer style airbox from a junkyard car / on ebay or this company called Brock makes a replacement airbox for 1st gen tacomas but it's the same exact everything as our 4runner airboxes. Like one of the guys on here already said I wouldn't trust any aftermarket brand for the MAF sensor, seeing as how it's such a crucial part to how your truck runs. With this swap you go to a much easier replaceable MAF that's cheaper and you stick with the OEM manufacture (Denso). Hope this helped. gh25 thanks for the detailed response! I think I'll have to go with your fix as I don't see any better alternative. I've been looking for another solution because I've never repinned anything, guess it's time to learn...

Of course! Glad I could help. And yeah honestly I don't think there is a better option lol. The only option is to try and get a used one but then your right back in square one with the old style MAF. With the updated airbox replacing the maf is actually even easier since it's just two little screws instead of having to take off the air tube. Honestly kinda unfortunate toyota designed it that way but oh well at least theres a fix. And BTW the re-pinning is super easy. All your doing basically is removing the pins from the plastic connector housing and changing them to a different location / hole in the connector. No soldering or anything. Just make sure to read the fourm about it or else it can be fustrating lol. I recently did a steering wheel swap in mine and after figuring out how the wires come out of the connectors it's easy now. There will be a bigger clip that holds the all pins in that you have to get out with a pick or really small screw driver and then the pins are still held in by little tabs on the connector so you just have to use your really small screw driver or pick again and tug on the wire your taking out and depress the little tab thing holding it in and the pins will come out.
@habenaro who is also on here has a great post on yotatech fourms with pictures of everything for the re-pin and showing taking out the pins. You can do it! Start at post #3327

The Amazon link I posted is a current link. I’m pretty sure They made the sensor for Toyota.
The newer one would be the way to go as long as you can source the parts.

This is what I would do as long as the MAF is available. You would know pretty much immediately if the Aftermarket MAF is bad. I luckily have a few spare used ones I grabbed at yards before they were gone.
All mine so far are working so far and I have 2 1997 with 257K and a 1998 with 290K with the original MAF in them. I just every few years clean them with the MAF sensor cleaning solution. :-)
