Might have to get a new axle. Help me!!

I got my right rear axle seal changed back in june and it failed again, I believe sometime in october or early november. I took it to 7 to 7 in San Diego, and they were really awesome about honoring their warranty!!

Regardless, they changed the seal and they took a long hard look at the axle to see if they could find any defects but they couldn't find any. If I need to change the axle are there any options to keep my cost down? I don't want to use a 98 used axle because I will probably just have the same problem with the seals. Did the 99's have the same problems and if not will they fit my 4runner which is a 98? Do I just need to face the music and buy a brand new axle?

My advice (I've changed my seals in both my Runners at around 100k) is definelty use OEM Toyota seals and do both since the left one will fail eventually.

Also check to see if the rear diff breather located on the top of the axle pumpkin isn't clogged which will hasten the seals to fail.

If the bearing is worn enough to allow the axle to move up and down or front to rear even a small amount it beats up the seal. I also second what Ron said but if there is pressure buildup inside the diff why doesn't the other seal (opposite side) fail as well.

I will double check but I believe they changed the breather last time. Are the axle bearings on both sides or is it something in the middle of the axle? Also will they have to saw through the ABS ring to get to the bearing? If it can be changed without doing damage to the seals I will probably have that taken care of.

There should be one bearing on each axle located behind the seal in the housing. I don't have a third gen manual but I can't imagine having to saw anything off.

Yeah I am probably screwed. Every time they remove the seal they have to saw through the ABS ring. It is just a bad design I believe. I will maybe post on yotatech too. I am sure they are very sick of this topic though.
 
If it turns out that you do have to replace the axle I would definitely do the bearing at the same time. How is this " ring " mounted. I'm having trouble visualising this situation. Have you asked Toyota if sawing through it is normal procedure? It just sounds wrong.
 
sawing through the abs ring is normal procedure when replacing your inner seal and bearings... i just did this 6 or 7 months ago... cost about 90$ per axle so less than 200 for the whole deal, about 150$ less than the stealership wanted, and it was literally 4 bolts and 6 hours ( 4 of that was waiting for the machine shop)

you dont need to replace your axle, but if you decide to anyways, can i have your old one? it would be nice to have a spare around

Yeah thanks for the writeup. I was really close to doing that myself, but decided not to because I don't have a garage, and all the basic tools like the oil pan and axle stand. Those things add up. And I generally like to have a spare vehicle if things get hairy when I am fixing my car.
