Gas mileage and weird knock or rattle when accelerating?

My 4runner has been doing this for a while now. I have a rattleing type sound only when i accelrate. I brought it to toyota to have it check out and they told me it was a loose value and that it won't hurt the truck just annoying to listen too . does any one have any idea what im talking about and if its hard to fix?.

PS. what is everyone getting for gas mileage? I am getting about 14-15 in town and 17 on highway seems alittle low. I have a 97 with 148000 miles on it. all shecdule tune ups done.

have you tried putting 91 octane in the engine? may help it run a bit better... or seafoam?

EDIT! that reminds me! i put half a can in my engine oil and did that about every other oil change and i dont have my ticking anymore! try that, or see what other people here think about seafoam

loose valve? as in the truck needs a valve adjustment? why not just do the valve adjustment, they aren't hard to do, but you do need the proper shims, which if you don't have a collection can be a bit of a pain.

as far as the rattle on acceleration only, that sounds more like detonation than a problem w/ a valve, but w/out hearing it, its a hard call to make.

The seafoam is an engine cleaner, i don't know if they have an oil additive or just a combustion chamber cleaner, i've never used it myself.
 
LOL Seafoam is what all the Jeep guys use!! Back when I had my jeep and was on the Jeeps unlimited forum, it seemed like every other thread was about Seafoam. Its the first time I've heard it here though.
