Is this a good price for a '99 4Runner LTD 4WD?

1999 4Runner Limited 4WD, 50k miles in excellent condition for $18,700????? Is there anything to look for on such 4Runners? I haven't ran carfax on it, but will do soon, I have been told it was a 1 owner car and apparently he averaged about 10k miles /year in it. Thanks for you help! I am new to the forum and hopefully will have a 4Runner soon!

Yes, that seems like a good price. I ran a price check at Edmunds, it was $18,503 for a average 4Runner with no options and $20,220 for excellent condition 4Runner with no options.

Of course where you live, options and the condition does tend to change things. I know money is getting tighter and prices are going down, the price seems good, of course I would always offer less.

Also, I think 99 is a good year. There were quite a few changes in 99. 50,000 miles is also quite good.

KBB is pretty accurate.

Check to see if that 4runner has a rear axle e-locker (there should be a switch on the dash to the left of the steering wheel). If you off-road, this is a very desirable option to get.

Also, there was 2 TSB around that time regarding two things:

1. Rear suspension fix to prevent bottoming out & improve handling with a full load on 2wd models (however, i have heard that 4wd models also got the fix).

2. Improve front door seals and re-shaped outside rearview mirros to decrease wind noise.

These are NOT recalls...so, it depends on the owner to get these two things done. Ask your local dealer for more details.

They were originally asking 21,900 for this 4Runner, then it was reduced to $19,900. I offered $18k and they came back with $18740. It is a one owner, traded in on a Lexus GX470 (The new Highlander lookin' Lexus.) The backseats look unused like no one has ever sat on them, the fronts are also in great shape! I think the a-c/heater fan is a little loud though... is that commom. I also thought the 4Runner would have a little more cajones than a 4.0 liter Jeep Wrangler, it doesn't feel like it does, it just helps that it has a 4-speed auto w/OD. Any other thoughts on the '99's?
 
The 99 interior was upgraded. The odometer is now LCD and is much harder to tamper with. It now has pre-tensioners on the front seat belts. New second generation air bags. The Limited came with a new multi-mode 4WD system as standard. The rear suspension re-call is for 96 to 98 and the head gasket problem was in the 96 and 97's.

Overall, they made some nice upgrades in 99.

THANKS!... I think this 4Runner is a winner. I am going to go get it tonight. (Still going to insist on $18k though ;) ) I haven't ran carfax yet though, a friend of mine bought one of those unlimted carfax deals but I can't ahold of him yet. That's the last thing I am waiting on before signing the deal. Well that an the Lexus mech looking it over for leaks/problems.

Thanks to all who replied, hopefully I will have a 4Runner soon. Then we can talk about TRD SC upgrades......
 
Good luck. You can still get a bad egg. I would have a mechanic get it out, if you get the Lexus mechanic make sure he is not bias and he is working for you. If you don,t get a mechnaic at least check out the fluids, especially the transmission fluid. Ask to put it on a ramp and look at the frame and take off a wheel or two and look at the brakes and driveline. AND of course don't forget to take a picture and post it here. ;)

By the way, if the former owner traded it in on a GX 470, that is basically a 4th generation 4Runner. Shows he has good taste.:rolleyes: If he bought a RX 300 or RX 330, then he bought a Highlander looking Lexus; you know, were they have the engine in the wrongway (sideways). ;)

You are right he bought the GX which I understand is a 4Runner. I almost bought an '03 V8 4Runner, but I wanted all the options, including NAV, the sticker shot up quickly over $40k. :eek: With the Highlander out, it's sad that the 4Runner has "outclassed" itself, where is the Sequoia going to go now? I have heard the LX Lex will become a Sequoi based vehicle now that the GX is out. Anyway, I think resale on the $40k+ 4Runners will be low because in the end, they are still 4Runners......Not High end Lux SUV's...
