First Impressions of OME lift (new to OME)

So we ordered an OME lift last week that arrived last Friday.
OME 881 front coils with new OME comfort shocks
OME 906 rear coils with comfort shocks

Had everything installed Saturday for $235 with alignment. (didn't want to tackle my self)

This 4Runner has 124k on it and the stock suspension was shot, I could press all the way down on one of the front struts with one hand. We didn't want a 3 inch lift or an expensive lift (looks like I just spent it anyway since I'm thinking of replacing it) so we went with OME based on recommendations.

When I first picked it up I thought it road a bit rough, but I thought it might settle.

We've put 157 miles on it and it rides way to stiff for our liking, it seems to bounce over all little bumps instead of absorbing them. Kinda like a go kart does. There isn't any more body roll and the cornering is 100 times better but I wouldn't want to take a road trip in it.
WAY to stiff for us.

I'm going to be looking around for another source again. Any thought from you guys with this set-up or changes you've made?

Thanks

Nobody else has said it so I will:

Unfortunately we are in the minority, you and I. I have the same taste in ride quality that you do but most people like that stiff as a go cart ride. It's because of that OME and most other suspensions parts are the same way. The shocks were replaced on our 4r with KYB GasAdjust before I adopted it. Every time we hit a bump it's like getting slapped in the back of the head. The fronts are OK but the backs have hardly any give. They would be good for towing I guess but I tow my boat with my Tacoma.

Well this isn't good to hear concidering i ordered the 881's with the 891's with the sport shocks with front and rear top plate spacers. oh well..... here's to a stiff ride

New info is always appreciated, good review. I am upgrading my old worn out suspension soon and still trying to decide exactly what I'm getting. Looking to do 1-3 inches yet stay with as soft of a ride as I can so going by this post I would definitely NOT like this set-up. I agree, pics are nice but in this case your not reviewing how it looks rather the feel of the ride. Hard to capture that in photos.

I will be swapping this out next week. I am going with the Sonora Steel 3.0 set-up. I would love to get the 7.2 but I'm already going to eat a good portion of the OME cost.

This is our daily driver and road trip rig.

I didn't take any pics because it doesn't matter what I looks like to me. We went with the OME based on recommendations of ride quality not photo quality.

You will see the OME in the classifieds soon........

you should pick up a fat chick and get a pick of her in the ride and one out of the ride, that might show an example of ride quality.....she has to be really really fat though.....lol

I do know Toytec and have ordered parts from them in the past. However, we were not looking to spend that much on a better riding suspension versus a 3 inch lifted suspension. I have Donahoes in my Tundra so I know what a good set-up is supposed to be.

LOTS of weight on both ends is about what this would need..........thelizardking

You really should give the springs and shocks some time to settle in, 157mi is not nearly enough. I'd say 500-2000mi of drive time is needed before you can really say how well they'll ride.

this is the exact lift im looking to do. this is also my daily driver and is only street driven with the family. anybody have any input with this setup? if it doesn't ride nice on street then i gotta rethink what i want. do you think different shocks (not ome shocks) would make this ride softer for street use? please chime in guys

i say ride comfort is first dependent on the springs followed by shocks then by tires....

but what your talking about here is a complete system so anyone part that's not right may/will effect the others, you know what they say about the sum of all it's parts, if you want a nice ride and minimal lift just use a spacer, it shouldn't noticeably effect the ride other then the tippy feeling you get from any lifted rig.

if you don;t plan on doing any off road and have stock size wheels why don't you just buy the OE stuff? bilsteins and such

x2

Took my OME about a month I think to soften up, it was fairly rough at first. Though I did go with a stiffer set up, 3 months (maybe 4k miles) later it is considerably different. :bluejump: I love it now.

I have the Sonoran steel 3.0 lift. It gave me about a 2 inch lift (I have a 2002) which makes it the same height how a 99 was stock and it rides great. It basically makes the truck ride how it was stock (which is just a little rough, don't expect it to be like a Cadillac). I went with the Tockico trekmaster shocks and they make the ride not too firm and not too bouncy, it's just right. I also installed a set of airbags in the rear springs for the few times when I do some heavy towing to help level it out, so there is no need for "heavy duty" springs that affect the ride quality.

'99 OEM replacement springs are going to ride the smoothest for you, but will only lift you about an inch (and if you have a '99 4runner, you'll stay the same height obviously). These are a good middle ground for a DD and a trail rig.

OME coils are off road coils and no doubt they are stiff. Most if not all brands of lift coils are going to ride stiffer than stock because most people who do suspension lifts are trying to improve their off road capabilities and aren't bothered by a "truck-like" ride on road.

If it rides smooth and soft on road, it's not going to be much good off road and if it rides great off road, it'll be stiff on road. You are going to have to deal with this trade off with whatever brand of lift coils you go with.

What you really need is my suspension set up for a nice plush ride!! However the PP springs are disscontinued....try the classified sections or CL. It may take awhile to find a set, but they are well worth it!

BGMAC,
It's funny you mentioned that PP srping set-up, I had that on my 98 and loved it. Just a little higher and with the bilsteins a good deal better ride. So much so I put 248k miles on it before I sold it. I would put that on if I could find it again.

I'm afraid I just don't have the patience to wait for this to settle. I knew it was going to ride firm but this is way more than I was lead to believe.

Honestly, I would love to get a 7.2 lift and call it a day but while I'm not driving it daily I'll go with the 3.0 for now and enjoy the occasional High Sierra fire road fishing trip.

When the wife turns it over to me then we'll see.
