So the asking price is $4k? Hmmm personally, I think that he is asking a little too much. Maybe around $3k? But if it really is immaculate and has been well taken care of, the price may not be too bad. Did you have a look under the vehicle to see if there is any rust?
In my opinion 245k is too many miles! I know it's a Toyota, but there comes an end to every engines life. If it were a Ford/Chevy/Dodge/etc, 120k would be my upper limit. So yeah, the Toyota has got more than TWICE the mileage, but will inevitably need major work sooner or later.

Only input I can say is that shaking while braking is usually mistaken for rotors. When in actuality its your wheel bearings. I'd be weary...

I am on the east coast but south so there is no rust on this vehicle. Yeah the miles are high and if I had 8k I could find a great vehicle but alas I don't. And his starting price was in the 5k range. Problem is all the lower mileage runners I have driven (15o) range have driven like crap and were beat. So this why am considering it given what I have seen and driven. Worse thing happens I blow an engine and throw newer one in. I looked at a 99 yesterday and the lower front shock mount was almost compleately gone along with the rest if the truck. Thanks for the info I am going to look at the truck again today to make sure I'm not nuts

What is your max budget? Will this be your DD?
Hate to say it, but at $4k you're going to be looking at an older, high mileage 4R which perhaps makes the 4R not the best fit for your budget... I certainly couldn't imagine paying $4,000 for something with 245k miles on it, even if it is a Toyota.

I think it's funny how people deflate a value of a 3rd gen with high miles but if you see a 1st gen 4Runner with 200k on it and in great shape $3000 is a great deal.
Reality is if the 3rd gen is in exceptional shape for the age and miles $4k is still a solid deal. Yes,the high miles on the drivetrain might concern me and it would depend on what I'm going to use the truck for.
How many miles a year would you say you'll drive it would be my first question since if you are only goign to put say 5-6k miles a year on it that wouldn't be a big deal but if it's your DD and you're going to rack up over 12k miles a year on it then you might consider spending some dough on a new motor and possibly a tranny in the next few years.
My '99 has 157k on it as it sits and I wouldn't take less than $7000 for it due to the model it is,locker equipped and the shocks and coils have less than 40k miles on them but the biggie is (unfortunalty it would be hard to convince a buyer) I know it's mechanically sound and has zero leaks and burns very little oil and I have no body rust and the rust underneath barely qualifies as rust.
It comes down to you as a buyer if you feel comfortable with spendign X amount on a high mileage truck and are willing to accept you might need to invest some money here and there on the upkeep.
