Yeah I always thought it just let the rpms get higher before shifting, but it makes acceleration much more responsive by quickly selecting the right gear. I also noticed that it doesn't always shift at a higher rpm, it only does that if you really step on it. It's perfect for the hilly terrain and highway merging I constantly do on my commute.
