Remote starter issues

The remote starter in my 03 4Runner worked fine for the first couple of days after the vehicle was delivered (I bought if used last week). Now when I push the remote button the engine cranks but does not start. The engine starts fine when I start it the normal way.
Any ideas what might be causing this and what I could do to fix it?

The 4th gens have the transponder in the key. There should be a unit holding a spare key to fool the truck into starting so maybe there is a loose connection in that area.

Just a guess as I have no clue what kind of remote start you are using.

If you have some specs post them up and maybe the board can help better.

Where can I look in the engine bay to find the remote starter? I know the receiver is mounted on the windsheild behind the mirror, but I have no idea where to look to find the unit that actuates the starter motor.

The remote starter device should be hidden behind the plastic panel just to the left of the parking brake. You will find the extra valet key there as well. Yours maybe different but that is where every remote starter I have seen is located.

I had a similiar problem

I had a remote start installed a few months ago. When I first got it sometimes I would not use it and just start the engine with the key. Well the starter would crank continuously for several seconds and then the engine would start or sometimes it would not.

I took it back to the installer and they fixed and I didn't have the problem anymore. If I remember correctly the starter was not correctly connected to the remote starter. It was a simple fix. I would find out who had it installed and just take it back and tell them the problem.

So, a few days ago the starter was working again, but now it just cranks and doesn't start.

Could this be an issue connected to what items are turned on when the starter is used (ie. the A/C or the lights)?

When I activate the remote starter, it is as if my key was in the ON position for 3 seconds and then it starts cranking. I have not had problem with mine starting but I recently had a problem with the way the guy wired it. All I can say is never again will I install a remote starter in a vehicle of mine! Too much aggravation for something I only use in the winter.
