I'm currently going through the same thought process. I got rear ended on the highway, and it appears to be relatively minor damage ... but in my case he scratched up the rear bumper pretty well, plus he hit my trailer hitch and tail pipe. Either of those could end up being significant, but haven't gotten the estimate yet. IF there's no damage to the trailer hitch or exhaust, then I might be willing to live with the scratched rear bumper and put the money toward other upgrades. But I'm typically not willing to work directly with the other party ... would much rather remove the hassle and go through insurance ... and especially not for an amount less than the estimated repairs.

Can't give you specific advice on the damage repair, but in general, never let the other party make their problem, like potential insurance consequences here, into your problem.

We agreed to $600 over the phone.
He shows up with $500. Starts giving me the half Russian half English runaround nonsense and keeps calling me “tony,” after I repeatedly correct him on my actual name.
I lose it in his face in public.
Crowd shows up.
I calm down. I take his $500, write him a receipt stating the $500 is for the paint scratch only.
I’m so pissed at this dude that I’m considering filing a claim anyways and having it inspected for further damage. Not sure if it’s worth the energy at this point but this dude was absolutely awful to communicate with.

Oh sh!t! What a jerk.
I really doubt there is more damage, these trucks are tough. You might end up paying more in the long run with the claim and insurance and everything, I think you made out alright. Take it to a body or detail shop and they should hook you up for a couple hundred max.

$940 estimate. The dude took 2 days of phone calls before he would fork out his insurance provider. If the estimate goes over $1000 he loses a point and his insurance goes up. He keeps giving me the run around of letting his friend paint it for me and he would drive me around town while my car is getting fixed. Not to be racist but the dude comes across as a high anxiety stressed Russian constantly telling me to lie to the insurance if it goes over $1000 and what not.
He offered me $500 cash to not say anything and I live with a 4” scratch on the bumper.
Should I take the money or should I go through insurance and file a claim just in case there is further damage? I could use $500 cash and I can live with the scratch unless there ends up being frame damage.

You should never talk to this guy again and deal with your insurance agent only. Don't **** with this. You should have called the police the second he refused to hand over insurance information.
Nevermind, I see you took his money already. Terrible, terrible mistake. You just let yourself get bullied. And you can't file a claim now. You took his money and gave him a receipt. It's over. He could actually sue you if you file a claim now.

Yeah I guess in hindsight I should’ve called the police when he refused to show me his insurance. Still semi happy with the $500 cash at least.

Glad you got it somewhat resolved, but I would never have patience for someone like that. I wouldn't have accepted the money either, out of principle. It's like selling something on craigslist. If I agree on a price before meeting and the buyer shows up with less, he can eff off.
That being said, I have been on the other side of the accident where I am at fault and the other party was nice and willing to work with me.

He got off easy... but $500 in your pocket isn't bad either.
That said, when dealing with jokers like that… sometimes it’s more about the principal than the money.
If I was in your shoes with him trying to short change me $100, I would have probably just told him I prefer to go though insurance at this point and dropped it. If he presented the additional $100, I would have told him the new price is 1k.

Well that sucks. If a Prius hit my truck...there'd be no witnesses. Just sayin'. They're always trying to kill me when I ride my bikes, or walk with my daughter, in SEATTLE!!!
Seriously though, I had a red minivan swipe the front of my truck when I took my daughter to the park. She just moved the van farther forward when she realized what happened. Her vehicle said this was not the first time. I just buffed it out and took photos and stuff. Just wasn't worth the aggravation at the time. Be well, deep breaths.

well at least you got some cash...
i got hit at an intersection once: guy gets out of the car and says 'im sorry i was on my phone.' i go 'no problem,' called the police and asked for insurance info. police show up and say theres nothing they can do - and heres the real curve ball - the dumb ass said he didnt want to hand over insurance because he was an employee at local dealership transporting a brand new car and that if it got written up theres no doubt he would lose his job and they couldnt sell the car as new. given i was in a true pOS JETTA WAGON 2.SLOW surfmobile i really didnt care about it too much and just needed a headlight and grill perhaps, i decided to be the nice guy and they fixed it where he worked for free - and didnt fire him because he never had to officially write it up. crazy...who crashes a brand new car from a new car dealership they work for??

AAA is giving me the option to still file the claim with no repercussions aside from having to give the $500 back as it will be deducted from the final repair costs.
I kind of want to go ahead and file even though I’ll lose the $500. I’ll get a new bumper, new baby car seat, and some peace of mind with this shithead.

Don't go through insurance if you can avoid it. People say it being 95% will lower resale value forget that reporting it to your insurance company will lower the resale value a hell of a lot more. Anyone that chooses to run Carfax will see the accident on the report and may or may not believe you that it was just a little tap.

Needless to say, the police would have to not be involved too. Regardless, I currently have 281K miles on my 06, and intend to drive it until it dies ... so I don't really care about the impact to my resale value as I never intend to resell. To each his own ...

Do not wet sand, you will end up with a bigger problem than you have now.
Skip the detail shop and Buy a griots garage buffer, pep boys has them on sale for $129 or a porter cable 7424xp a couple of buffing pads and some polish, start with the least aggressive product.
Most if not all of the white paint will come off. You may be left with scratches and it looks like the bumper cover is dented. You will have a great buffer that will last for years and can have a great looking swirl-free finish on your 4runner.
Check out autogeek, autopia car care products or detailed image. (Autogeek has some great how to videos).
Blackfire One Step, HD Speed and mckees37 360 are all great polishing products. Pep boys also has some griots garage products on sale. Good luck.

I think that part "Bumper" is around $300.00 from Toyota. It comes unpainted. The paint job may be around $200.00 ?
