Nope, that is for the factory microphone for NAVequipped 4Runners. For this Gentex mirror, just leave it aside.

Sounds like you connected to an ECU wire rather than a ACC wire.
I installed a Gentex mirror with Homelink/HiDefcamera on my Civic, I love it.

That's exactly what I did, found the right wire and now it works the way it's supposed to.
Thanks for the help!

Need help please
hey guys,
I'm new here and also thinking about upgrading my regular mirror on my recently purchased 06 T4R SR5 to the one with a compass. I had a Pathfinder before and find myself feeling lost without that handy little feature. I used it more than GPS and only now understand how much I liked having it.
This write up is great and is very helpful but I'm actually looking to get a used Toyota mirror off another 4R or Highlander or a Lexus and install that as I don't need Homelink or temp. features. I found one on eBay which comes with short length of the original wiring (most of them do not) and it looks like there are two wires there but they aren't labeled. Does anyone know how to wire that into my sunroof harness. I'd like to make sure it will work before I order one. I'm assuming it should be even easier than an aftermarket one?
any help would be greatly appreciated :-)

I picked up a used Gentex Auto Dimming/Compass/Homelink mirror for only 65 bucks on eBay. Installation/wiring was a breeze following 4RunnERD's example. I'd highly recommend getting one if you don't already have one - best upgrade I've done to any vehicle in a long time.

So I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking for, but I'd like to add a mirror with a compass (amber) to my '06 SR5. Homelink isn't totally necessary for me. I don't have a sunroof, so is there another power wire I can connect it to? Not sure what to search for on Ebay. Seems like there are a lot of Gentex mirrors on there. Not sure which one specifically I should look at.

I went to a local non u-pull-it junkyard and got a mirror off a 4Runner for ten or twenty bucks. It's green, not amber, but it is auto dimming, which I really like. If you want amber, go to a local u pull it junkyard, you should be able to find one for five or ten bucks from some vehicle that will work. I'd grab the windshield mount and as much wire as you can with it and the plastic cover over the wires. Homelink is not part of the mirror, at least not on 4Runners with a sunroof, but many other cars have it in the mirror. There are two major manufacturers and I don't remember who makes what, but whatever brand the lincolns use seem to have way more issues than what most GM cars use from what I've seen at junkyards. When I grab a mirror I take a putty knife to the edge of the mount and whack it gently with a wrench or something and it pops right off.
Someone else may be able to tell you if power is run up there by default or not. If you have map lights you have power. If you have map lights make sure you pry them off from the right side, I "think" from the windshield egde.
I bought the map lights with homelink, you want homelink, unless maybe if you leave your runner parked outside your house.

Just wanted to say thanks to the OP for the write-up! Got my gentex in last night, installed in about 15 minutes with your instructions.
Checked wiring on my '11 SR5, the molex to the sunroof motor (not the console connector) was a dark blue wire for +12vdc on IGN and ground was correct with white/black stripe.
Went with the basic dimmer with no readouts at all since I have the OEM homelink and dash displays temp/direction!

Another TY to the OP. Just installed a Gentex 453 autodim with Homelink and amber compass on my 2007 Sport. Tapped into my sunroof wires as the OP did and the superb write-up and pics made it a piece of cake.
Got the mirror for $110 shipped from Cam's Rearview Mirrors on eBay. The service and condition of the mirror were both outstanding. I ordered it over the weekend and it arrived via Priority Mail, solidly packed and with all needed connectors, zip ties, the wiring protector piece, instructions, etc., within a couple of days. As noted in the listing, I did have to extend the wires by a few inches but the seller even includes butt connectors to do that.
Speaking of connectors, one issue I had was being unfamiliar with the Scotchlok taps. Took a minute to figure out but they're genius - you place the tap on the wire and when you fold and close it, it creates a socket on the side. You then crimp one of the provided flat connectors onto the end of the mirror wire and simply plug it in to the tap. Much, much easier than the old kind where you insert the wire before closing the tap onto the target wire.
Pics of how it works are tough to find but here's an illustration of it closed on the wire - note the slot socket formed on the side.
The seller provides the needed flat plug, like this:
Just plug it in and you're done. I had never worked with those so as mentioned, it took a minute to put two and two together. Maybe it's been brought up elsewhere in this or another thread but if so, I missed it.
Finally, my mirror didn't need the compass calibrated - the direction appeared as soon as I turned on the key. It was also already set to the proper zone. But when I first started driving it would only show two directions in the display. If yours does this, drive around the block or in a couple of circles and it should begin working properly.
The mirror looks and works great and I'm very pleased.
