Hello all,
I just replaced both valve cover gaskets on my 03 v6 4runner. I pulled off the valve covers and cleaned the inside of the covers with non-chlorinated brake cleaner. I scrubbed the crap out of them with a non-metal bristle brush.
I don't have any pictures of my valve covers for an example of my issue, but I'll use a picture of michaelreed's valve cover for example (great write up on the valve cover job, btw).
I feel like I may have used too much brake cleaner or scrubbed a little too hard, because the gasket material (possibly fipg) that is sealing the thin cover that is on the inside of the cover (this is riveted on. see picture for an example. red arrows indicate the outside perimeter of the cover I'm speaking of), started peeling up, and some small pieces were coming off. The pieces of gasket material were no bigger than approximately 1/32 in diameter, and I made sure to remove any pieces that came loose before reinstalling the covers. This happened on both covers. I would say that the majority of this gasket material is still intact, but a fair bit came off.
Will this cause any problems? The material itself seemed fairly malleable and wasn't really hard or anything. I guess I'm just worried about more coming loose and falling down into the valves in the future.
Fyi, I got my covers a lot cleaner than the one in the picture. Maybe got a little too carried away.
