Mod: 4wd V-8 to 2wd capable?????

OK, I was just thinking and forgive me if I've missed it.....has anybody been able to make a V-8 4wd have the ability to be a 2wd??? By that I mean have the ability to be 2wd, purely for gas mileage reason.....comments, CSM-H

It could be done with extensive modification, but I'm not sure what your after. Do you want to retain 4wd and have a selectable system like the V6?

If would be cheaper to trade in the V8 and buy a new V6. It's just not practical at any cost.

Yes, you actually can do it. I did a similar thing (as an experiment) on a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland. It was...interesting. At the time I could get parts at cost so it wasn't horrific. For THAT project, I think the total cost came out to be around $1600.

However, for the 4Runner, it would be a LOT more expensive. Just costing out the parts and then adding a bit for a few customizations which would be necessary with this, it would probably run in the $4000 range.

Well, he might be able to gain a mile per gallon or two, but he wouldn't break even on the out-of-pocket expenses for about 25 years or so.... LOL
