Upgraded to 05 sr5 would like your opinion

Hi guys,
I have been reading this forum for years. I just traded in my old 1997 Limited with 176k for a 1005 SR5 with only 42k still under warranty. The new 4.0 liter feels great, plenty of power and I love how much more nimble and quiet it is. Onboard computer showed max up to 25.5 mpg on a 180 mile trip last night. After refill and calculation it averaged to 21 mpg. Is this normal?
Also, please let me know if I got a descent deal on it. The sticker was 15,995 - $500 promo - $4100 for my old truck + TTL = came out to $12.5 out of the door. Do you think its a good deal?
Also, do you have any suggestions for improvement on stock... any good mods?

Congrats on the new ride:D

I can't comment too much on the price although I have heard 4wd T4Rs bring good money where you are. Even in Florida where they go for less your deal sounds ok.

The mpg readouts indicate 10%-12% high for most people, that's 'normal'. The miles-to-empty display seems pretty good. Once it says 0 miles to go most people seem to have 3 gallons or so.

Improvements: Most seem to like a little lift and if you're not into "lifted" then a levelling kit to raise the front a bit. Beyond that it's hard to recommend stuff without knowing what you intend to do with it and what you like.

thanks for your comments and info. According to the dealer the truck was in their inventory for 66 days, so I assume it might have had some old gas in it as well, as I just picked it up on TH night. I really like the fact that the air intake goes straight into the fender well... no need for CAI mods. Hopefully MPGs will improve.

If you typically mess with intakes check this out: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=40340 The other thing I would offer is to oil carefully if you use a K&N style filter. The 4th gens like clean MAF sensors.

What kind of mileage did you get out of old T4R? Without knowing cruise speed, load and terrain 21mpg sounds pretty good. I wouldn't hold my breath for a lot more based on fresh gas.:(

I did have a K&N filter in my old truck and was getting solid 20 mpg until recently. For the past couple month my mpg was fairly low for some reason. I usually drive it 20/80 city/hwy and some traffic of course.
Prices are really low here in MN now, i saw 87 for $2.09 last night, but there's always a chance that they'll be back to $4 :mad:
Interesting thread on that carbon filter MOD. are there any pics out there? Would you recommend K&N or something else out there?

I like the OEM filter and will stick with that. I installed the pre-cleaner so I am 'stuck' with a stock intake which suits me just fine...

Congrats on the 05! I think for $12.5 ish with trade that you got a good deal. And yes 20+ mpg on that V6 is very correct!!!

I have never gotten better than 21-22 MPG Hand Calculated, even with my 04 2WD. The MPG readout is always 1.5-3 MPG generous. I believe it is a running average vs. calculating it at the end of the tank with X miles driven and X gallons to fill the tank.
 
Yeah I think you're right. In a manual it says that it refreshes the reading on the screen every 10 seconds. Therefore I assume that it takes a median reading of that time period and its consumption.
Oh well, lets just hope gas prices don't hike up again.
