I spoke to the people at Console Vault today and the lady who answered the phone said that they have had a lot of requests recently for a console vault that fits the 4runner. She said that if you are interested, go to the console vault website(Auto Vault, Gun Safe, Laptop Safe, Hand Gun Safe, Gun Vault, Portable Safe, Safe Manufacturer - Console Vault™), click the contact us tab at the top, and fill out the message form at the bottom with a message saying you would be interested in a 4runner console vault if one were made. Also explain how it would sell well. They make a one for the Toyota Sequoia, which would make the 4runner an easy decision for them considering the 4runner's higher production numbers and popularity with the people who would buy a console vault. She says that she is lobbying the owner to build it and that if enough people request it, it will happen. If you send a message about it, she will save your info and let you know directly when/if it gets produced.
On a side note, if this console vault doesn't come through, I am going to be fabricating something similar for myself. My good friend is an Mechanical Engineering graduate student so I/he have full access to a great metalworking shop, CNC machines, AutoCAD and everything else we might need. I don't want to take business away from Console Vault but if they have no interest in making a 4runner console vault than its not hurting them.
I would have to check to see if my design would violate any copyrights when I have it competed. If it does not, I may be willing to do a small run of console safes for interested members. Let me know if something like that interests you and stay tuned for more information. I may do a key but am also considering an electronic keypad option with key backup.
Even if my design comes too close to copyrights to produce for others, the dimensions and construction instructions posted for free wouldn't break any laws, right? Let me know if otherwise.
