Will A Lexus Smart Key Work?

Random question of the night:

Anyone know if a Lexus smart key could be programmed to work with a Limited?

It could be done if the FCC ID and IC were the same on both smart keys, I believe. I just checked the smart key on the ES350 and compared it to the 4Runner. They match except for the last three letters in both the FCC ID and IC .

What are your plans?

Once a smart key, such as the 06 and up IS, GS, LS and ES350 has been programmed (seeded) they can not be reused or programmed again. Do not buy a used one.

Gotcha. Good thing you posted that for the OP. Although, if I were interested in doing this myself, I wouldn't buy a used one to begin with since the backup key needs to be cut to match the new car anyway.

Thanks for checking! Well, It's nitpicking I know, but I have always been disappointed with how the Limited's key looks. The SmartKey functionality is too cool to have such a bland looking key. I have wanted something a little sleeker, or maybe even more convenient (think if this was built into a cell phone case), it would be one less thing to worry about.

I have had the smart key assembly apart multiple times and you could make a different housing for the components that would be much slimmer than the current one, especially if you relocated the battery.

What really got me thinking, was when I stumbled upon a new(er) version of the Lexus smart key:

It is the thickness of about 2 credit cards, and can just be tucked into your wallet and forgotten about. This peaked my interest, so I did some research.

The part numbers were a little annoying to track down, but here it is:
Normal Lexus SmartCard: 89904-50641
F Series Lexus SmartCard: 89904-50480

After this I found a place to buy them HERE

I knew SmartKeys were expensive so I didn't know what I was expecting to find, but....

$250 + The key (which is not included and can be found HERE) + laser cutting of the key + programming the key at dealer = More than I am willing to spend on a key that I don't even know will work.

So I looked around a bit more. From what I was reading, it seems that as long as the key works on the same frequency as your factory key, it can be programmed to work. After some searching, the frequency of our factory key is: 314.3MHz . I found that info HERE (Says the key is for a landcrusier, but looks the same. Scientific, I know.)

So now I had to find the frequency of the key for the Lexus SmartCard.
This was harder, but then I got lucky. A nice eBay seller had that posted on his page HERE. And what do you know, the frequency is a lovely 314.3MHz .

From the description:
"Brand New OEM touchless smart card key for
Lexus RX models 2008-2012 or other model equipped with smart key system with frequency 314.35MHz.
It is the size of a credit card,
it works just like your Fob remote,
except it can fit right inside your wallet!"

So all in all, I am still not totally sure it will work, and have too many other "more important" mods lined up than to drop the money on this now. I also might consider making something to house the key before I gave this a try. But I thought I would ask around here and post what I found in case any of your guys were interested.

Having a key for my 4Runner with the Lexus symbol on it would bug the hell out of me. I just rented a Chrysler 300 and the key said Dodge on it. It tells me the company has no attention to detail; wonder what other corners they cut?

I do agree that the smart key for the 4Runner should be cooler looking than it is. Also, it feels extremely cheap.

I would agree, and would probably come up with a solution to fix that if I ever got it. But also you would never have to look at it so that it a plus.

I would think one of the biggest problems would be getting the dealership to program it. They looked at me like I was crazy when I asked them to turn off the seatbelt chime. They would probably call the cops on me if I asked this.

Loose it and see how "cheap" it feels after replacement.

The Rav4 one is identical to the 4Runner, minus it's black as well. No extra button like the highlander.
