4Runner Redesign

Hey Guys,

I was wondering when Toyota would redesign the 4Runner? The Pathfinder just got redone and I was wondering when Toyota would follow suite in order to stay ahead. Has anyone heard anything?

Thanks,
MEB

lets all hope and pray that the 4R doesn't follow the Pathfinder into unibody, soccer mom hell. Nissan took a capable off-roader and turned into into a glorified mini van.

They still have the Xterra which was more capable than the Pathfinder.

Quentin is probably right. We're actually into the fourth year of the 5th Gen (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013) so the 2014 model, due this Sept., should see some change.

Toyota has said they will introduce nine new or revamped models this year, 2014 Tundra being one of them, scheduled for a Chicago Auto Show reveal in Feb., with rumours of a Hino diesel. That does not imply the 4R will get a diesel, even though we'd all love one and even though its major competitor, the JGC, is getting diesel and eight speed transmissions. (No, we don't need another diesel thread.)

More likely is direct injection, possible LED headlamps on Limited models like those on the Avalon (not HIDs) and some minor interior changes - though all of them will be modest. The 4Rs continue to sell well, so Toyota will only be making changes to keep the truck current in the marketplace.

I might add (not to intentionally derail this thread) that the 2013 Pathfinder, Mallfinder, or whatever you want to call it, is a little more capable than its naysayers would suggest. I'm not saying it's as capable as the 4R, nor do I like it more, but it's very enjoyable to drive, with an interior I can't really find fault with — especially the heated steering wheel on mornings like today when it is -30C!

I don't know that we'll see DI in the 1GR. Everything I'm hearing is that the Tacoma redesign isn't getting a new 1GR, so that really makes me think that the 1GR will simply ride off into the sunset with the 5th gen in 3 or 4 years.

Possibly. Everything is pure speculation at this point. Toyota is ultra secret with all its future product plans. I keep asking the top officials, and get little more than smiles in return. I'll be asking again in a few weeks when I meet with Toyota brass but won't be expecting much.
