Why is my battery out at 40K

Soooo I'm cleaning my car and have the stereo on while doing so, about an hour into it the nav/stereo turned off and some of the lights on the dashboard were still on, weird.

I try to turn on the car (push button) and just heard a repetitive fast charge but I couldn't hear the starter.. Put on the jumper cables and it started up fine.

Left it alone and checked it after a few hours, the battery gauge is at a quarter only. Do I have a short that's draining the battery? Is it normal for the 4R to go out at 40K? Doesn't seem right... Thoughts?

Here in Las Vegas where it's hotter than sin in the summer it's normal for batteries to only last 40 to 50k miles.....dunno why.:noidea:
 
Battery life depends more on time and conditions than mileage. However, 4 years is about the average lifespan of a car battery.

Doesn't really matter, although people will argue that it does. I suggest doing some quick research to satisfy your comfort level with what brand you want.

I also agree with other posters; 4yrs battery life is very normal.

I'm no expert but I believe battery life can be diminished as the number of hard starts on your vehicle increases. I believe the initial "turnover" of the engine is a large strain on a battery.

Bottom line: it's an easy, relatively cheap fix.
 
here in Florida it isnt unheard of to have to replace every 2 years or so. I swapped mine with a diehard platinum
 
I'm not a Consumer Reports fanboy, except on products that can be objectively tested and evaluated..... like batteries.

For $4.99 (I think) you can subscribe to online access and read their battery tests and reviews.

As [MENTION=81573]Stifler[/MENTION] mentioned, I do remember the Diehard was highly rated.
 
I run them in all my Jeeps. If I dont have a dual batt setup I have a dual posts platinum at minimum. After having an Optima blow up in my TJ I vowed NEVER to buy another

Like Philsey says I an a Consumer Report fan boy and in the last rounds of tests they did on Car batteries, I think Cosco's brand and Die Hard were in the top 5.
 
It's strange, but my Toyota truck batteries have always been a "weak" link.....2 Tacoma's (2001, 2010), each with over 150K miles, and besides front brakes and oil the batteries were both replaced several times in each. On the other hand, my 2010 Lexus RX battery hasn't been touched yet and it's got way more electronics than any of the trucks/4Runner. Go figure.

I always replaced with whatever the Toyota dealer had on-hand; this 2012 4Runner will get the biggest DieHard that fits when its time.

Thanks I guess i will just go with Costco for now. Die hard sounds good, but don't have the time to shop around. Not sure how much life is left on the OEM battery after yesterday's incident. Anyone have a clue? If i dont leave anything on in the car, how much dwindled life is lef?

You need to swing with the wing in Camp P dude. The weather is much better or Fighter Town USA for that matter. F Yuma bro. So glad I was not there or in the Stumps. I liked "Training" at the beach. You know you have to practice your ability to swim in the ocean in a boat company and all,lol....

Although Costco batteries have the "Kirkland" label on them, they are actually Interstate Batteries. They come directly from Interstate on an Interstate Battery truck.

I know this because I was the Receiving Manager at Costco for many years.

I run them in my boat and haven't had any problems! No way you can beat the prices either.

I did that and they said the battery is fine, it just needs to be charged (driven for a few hours). Odd still that it lost charge after only an hour of usage.

Anyway, purchased a Duralast Jump Starter but seems to not have good reviews on auto zone. Anyone can attest to a better brand of Jump Starters?
