Tires for 2016 4runner

I have narrowed down to 3 choices:

Hankook Dynapro ATM
Goodyear DuraTrac
Michelin LTX AT2

I picked these based on tons of reviews (general, not vehicle specific) based on driving in Snow & rain (both important), decent handling, not to loud and good off road (not looking for super tire off road), mostly doing fire trails and beach.
Thanks.

Loud is subjective around here, I think Duratracs are loud compared to a lot of people on this site. Probably also the biggest hit to gas mileage of those options... fwiw.

any particular reason why those tires?

Here is a pretty good write up about different tires. If you're like me and too lazy to read it, they chose the Cooper Discoverer AT/3 as the best tire (that they tested)

I can't vote on your poll because you didn't have BFG K02's as a option.

I have Cooper AT3s. They are a decent tire. Hard to balance though. My dad just put on Nokian Rotivas on his 16 LTD . I'd recommend these before anything now for snow and rain.

I had the Duratracs for 85K give or take. They were a pain in the ars to balance and got louder as they wore down. I've recently went to the Cooper ST MAXX in 255/80r17. If you can deal with skinny, then I would look no further. They're whisper quite, balance well and are slightly taller than 285s.

Pretty major differences in that selection... AT tires fill the large gap between highway tires and mud tires. The Michelins are all the way to the highway end, the Duratracs are all the way over to the Mud end. The Hankooks are in the middle.

Based purely on the criteria you listed, the Michelins are probably the best of the three for you. However, I'd look more at the BFG KO2 (winter rated), Cooper AT3, or Cooper ATW (winter rated).

Thanks to everyone who has responded so far. Yes, a wide range in tire types, I tried to pick some of the best in each grouping. I thought about BFG K02. How are they in the snow?, the first gen tire was just ok in snow. Also how do they do in rain, the tread does not seem like it would displace standing water that great, but I would rather hear from people using them in both snow and rain. In regards to the Cooper AT3, had that on my list as well however alot of people state after 2 years they are not that go in the snow any more, they are also not very good on ice, which is why they came out with the ATW. The ATW could be a real winner, but have not see a ton of tests or feedback on them yet, they have limited sizes and are harder to get it seems. But net net I think you are spot on in your post! thanks. BTW is there a way to edit my poll, I would like to add the K02 and the ATW, would be curious as to where they would land.

I will second the STMAXX as an option based on your criteria... Take a look at @J-BlickPhoto and his rig in some good snow:

And mine on some good fire roads:

Best of luck!

The K02's are three peak rated, that means they are excellent in the snow. I can't really give you first hand experience on them in the snow because it's 70 degrees here in NC two days before Christma! Haha. As far as water, excellent!! These things haven't hydroplaned on me at all. The stock Bridgestone duelers sucked, the nitto terra grapplers I had before the K02's were horrible too. I had trail grapplers on my tundra and they sucked once they wore down, I went original K0's and had no problems.
Off-road the K02's will surprise you, they clear mid surprisingly well, not as good as a mud terrain but damn good. I was shocked at some of the muddy hills I was able to climb last time I went out. Figured I wouldn't make it and went for it anyways and was honestly shocked at how they dig in and cleared mud out.
They are VERY quite compaired the the terra grapplers I came from.

Im not a big person to follow the mainstream but look how many people are running them now, that's got to tell you something.

Seriously look further into them. I'm probably going to put a set on the wife's Subaru Crosstrek this coming year.

I put those exact Michelins on my 07 about 5 months ago and they are phenomenal. Great traction in all conditions and super quiet. A high quality tire that costs more but is worth it.

This is my experience with the Michelins. My 4Runner is my daily driver so I didn't want or need any especially aggressive tread patterns, but do take it off pavement not for wheeling but for trail heads and fishing holes so wanted something A/T. The Michelins seemed like the best compromise out there for my needs (the Coopers also looked good for this but were harder to get a hold of where I am).

Biggest drawback for the Michelins is the amount of small rocks they seem to hold on to. Not a problem if you reach highway speeds immediately after as that clears them all out, but otherwise can be annoying.

Regarding snow performance, there is another thread near the top that goes over this topic in detail. Long story short is that for snow performance an A/T tread might get you through the deep stuff the best, but won't be your friend when you hit hardpack or ice. Those of us that live in winter climates don't tend to put a lot of stock in that snowflake designation.

I run a dedicated winter tire so my LTX A/T2's don't see much snow, but when they have they handle it as well/poorly as your average all-season tire. If you're concerned about snow/ice performance and only want to run one set give a serious look at the all-weather A/T option like the Nokian Rotiiva and Cooper ATW.

I've been really happy with my General Grabber at2's.

Solid on pavement and dirt roads. Really good in last year's heavy winter here in Vermont.

Good pricing as well.
