2016 limited, 3000 miles at 5 months. I just looked hard at my owners manual and maintenance guide. Trying to figure out if my 4runner came with synthetic oil. So I can know whether to wait on an oil change or go ahead and put some Mobil 1 in there. No where does it specify synthetic oil, that I can tell. Can't imagine a 10,000 mile recommended change interval with Dino oil. Does anyone know if the 2016 comes with synthetic oil? I wouldn't even be able to add a quart if needed without that knowledge. The manual simply says to use Genuine Toyota Motor Oil, ILSAC GF-5 Multigrain oil, SAE 0-20.

Factory fill is synthetic, my dealer told me to bring mine in at 5k as oil changes up to 25k are on Toyota.

To my knowledge yes Toyota 0w-20 is synthetic but mixing the two wont matter. Never seen a synthetic oil that's says "flush and clean engine" before putting in synthetic if you have been running conventional.

Yep. Factory fill is synthetic. Brought mine in at 5000 miles and all they did was rotate the tires. Won't change it til 10000 miles.

Synthetic all Toyota/Lexus engines come with the specified oil already in them. With modern tech "break in period" in terms of the engine is not required.

Thanks for the info. I intended to keep the oil til 10,000 if synthetic. Weird that the manual doesn't indicate synthetic. Don't want to turn this into an oil change interval thread, that's been asked and answered a million times.

"If" you use your runner hard do a 5k or 7500 mi oil chance. Will not hurt. Peace of mind. But in terms of reliability you will not run into any issue with 10k.

I am pretty sure you only get two free oil changes, when you bring it in is up to you. In theory the free ones are at 10k and 20k.

I thought for sure you were wrong and the manual says "synthetic" in there somewhere in the manual, but you are correct.

FWIW - I don't think there is any new vehicle made today that comes with dino oil from the factory.

You are correct. At my 5,000 service I had them do an oil change. I paid for it. (They did ask if I wanted to use one of my free ones but I saved that for the one they did at 10,000.)

If you tell them you meet the extra criteria (dust, idling, etc...), they will change your oil but you have to pay for it (mine did it at cost though, so very cheap)

The manual does tell you it's synthetic. Pretty sure 0W-20 is not available in conventional oil so by specifying this callout it's saying synthetic. I think in conventional oil the closest thing would be 5W-20.

Waited until 5k and changed my oil using Mobil 1 full synthetic oil ( the one that says for Toyota/Honda ). Engine feels better and I increased 1 mpg. Definitely recommend Mobil 1 motor oil.

It tells me? Sort of, by omission ..... I shouldn't have to conduct an investigation and get an engineering degree to figure out not specified means synthetic.

Also, I think I will go with the 5000 mile intervals, have a Gobi rack and sometimes carry paddle boards and surf skis. It would be a year to get to 10k anyway. You guys have been very helpful.

its because 0w-20 only exists as a synthetic.
