To extend or not to extend warranty?

Do you guys think it's worth it to extend a warranty for a tep non-kdss? Haven't hit 30k yet and still have some time but can't decide if it's worth it. Are there any major issues I should be concerned about later into my ownership?

I think you would be fine. Only thing that could be expensive is if the Entune craps out. I've been cotemplating picking it up only because I have kdss. Some good prices on the forum from folks regarding warranties.
 
Ext warranty

I had an 11 Trail and bought a Toyota 100,000 mile warranty and used it one time for the rear gas struts. They cost about $100. The fella that bought the truck from me did not use it at all. So If you feel better and want one get it. Mike

Oh I'd definitely be going through this forum for it. Just not sure if I'll ever need it. I could put that $1k into something else.

My two pennies:

They wouldn't sell warranties if they couldn't make money off of them. The odds you will get more out than you pay in is low with a Toyota, but if you can get one for a decent price, it can give you piece of mind.

My family has owned a ton of 100k+ mile Toyota's, and an extended warranty would have never provided more in repairs than we paid for it. Outside of a $100 part for the A/C, a fuse for the A/C and one caliper, my most recent high mileage Toyota was a 2003 V8 4Runner-- had 0 repairs when I sold it with about 170k miles (relatively low miles for what is out there).

The 5th Gen 4Runner has a reputation for being very reliable. Take care of it with regular maintenance and it will give you years of service.

Same goes with any insurance. They model it so that the net of all the money they take in from participants minus all the money they pay out is a positive for them.

Whether or not you're one of the people that gets more out of the warranty than they put in or the other way around has to do with a lot of factors with chance probably being the largest contributor.
 
..on my 3rd 4Runner.... I’d say save the money. IF you have/had KDSS (which I do), then I might tell you to consider it. As previously stated, take care it with regular maintenance, and 9.9 out of 10 of these will be almost bullet proof (save a few hundred bucks every now and then).
 
A note on KDSS. I have a 2009 GX470 w/ KDSS. It just cost me about $1900 out of pocket for a KDSS repair. The entire assembly on the driver's frame rail needed replacement (since they have a completely updated part now). Not sure when this "new" part came into play, but I wasn't able to purchase any of the smaller pieces of this system for a less costly repair. On the bright side, Lexus stepped up and split the bill with me for an almost 8 year old truck with 104k. Toyota usually isn't as generous as it's rich younger brother Lexus.

If you can get an extended warrantee for about $1500 for a KDSS truck (and one that covers the KDSS of course) it might be a good deal.

I'd say that "chance" goes up if you buy a Ford or Chevy.
 
I bought an 8 year extended mostly because my TEP has KDSS.

I've also already had a major warranty repair on the vehicle within its first 15k miles so it makes me sleep better at night knowing I'm covered moving forwards.

It really comes down to: what's peace of mind worth to you?
 
My rule of thumb

My rule of thumb is to NEVER buy an extended warranty. Rarely will you ever have to use one, so all of the money you save over your life can pretty much buy a new car if need be.
 
I'm going to say not worth it.... With a vehicle this reliable I really can't justify the cost.... Generally I do not keep a vehicle long enough for the warranty to expire anyways but through my car insurance I have a 7 year 100K mile powertrain warranty anyways with a 250$ deductible... In a Range Rover or any German vehicle I think that it could be worth it but for a car with fairly simple technology like the 4runner I feel like it's really not that big of an issue... Expensive things are going to be drivetrain anyways so through insurance I'm covered for 2$ a month.... The only expensive thing I've heard of is the radio head unit going out- but is that worth a 1000$ warranty?
