Outer Banks!

Headed down next week and staying in KDH, we typically go to Corolla for the day and hit the beach, hopefully see wild horses etc.

Don't judge me, but the last 8 years this was done in my Honda Pilot, this will be my first in my 4R. In the Pilot, I would air down and make sure I hit the car wash after to spray off the undercarriage and inside the wheels. Never had any issues, never stuck although I had some close calls.

Are there any other things I should be careful of on/after my beach day? Do I even need to air down?

You'd have a much better time at 18-20 psi. Last year we took my uncles f350 on the beach and through some of the beach trails north of corolla. It got stuck and we had to dig him out and lower the PSI from 60 to 35 or so.

My tip is bring a buddy and a shovel & tow strap!

You'll be fine if you take the same precautions. That sand is super soft.

At the Corolla side, they don't require things like permits and recovery gear since it's part of the state road (needed to access Carova). Down in CHNS and CLNS, however, you do need a permit and recovery gear in order to be compliant. I'm sure a lot of the people don't have every single thing they require, though.

With good tires and locking the center diff you will not need to air down. I used to air down but after a week in the 4x4 area, you are REALLY taxing your TPMS batteries. And they are not cheap.

$50 FINE FOR NOT AIRING DOWN.

https://pilotonline.com/news/local/t...0511e1513.html

5/21/17

"Average-sized cars and trucks must reduce their tire pressures to no more than 20 pounds per square inch. Heavier trucks can go to 30 pounds or more. Violators could receive a citation and $50 fine."

Read the rules for driving the northern beaches, it's a state road and they write tickets for parking violations and speeding. And air. ;)

______________

In other news, the National Seashore - Hatteras & Ocracoke - only requires a low pressure air gauge, shovel, jack and a board for the jack. That's it. And a permit of course @ $120/year.

www.nps.gov/caha/planyourvisit/orv_faq.htm

"Have a low-pressure tire gauge, shovel, jack, and jack support board.

Other equipment that is recommended, but not required, is a full-sized spare tire, first-aid kit, fire extinguisher, trash bag or container, flashlight (if night driving), and tow strap."

Dual range 5 speed, factory skid plate, 3 position manually adjustable rear shocks and armored exhaust. All factory, including the white spoke wheels. The front sub frame finally rusted apart.

I aired down when I drove up there, didn't have any issues. We saw something like 20 horses, very fun day.

Unreal. What a crock of S. I have been going to the Outer Banks for 40+ years. One reason we got away from Nags Head decades ago but still love the northern beaches is the solace, relaxation and lack of BUSYBODY BEUROCRATS like Mr. White. I will not air down my tires as the 4th gen 4R gets it done perfectly in all tide conditions without airing down. Mr. White is not going to pay $180 per wheel for me to have my TPMS batteries replaced.

A couple of years ago we waited until the last part of the pavement to air down (with 4-5 other cars). A roid-raged cop on a 4 wheeler came by and was yelling at everyone to get moving...as if he was in combat...threatening everyone with tickets. Times sure change.

My 4th gen went 12 years with about 40% of that time aired down. Never had a TPMS battery problem.

Do any of you spray down your frame with Wd-40 or anything to help prevent rust? I heard that's a thing. Not sure if it works or not. I am driving out on assateague next week

Driving on the beach

Power spray the underside of the frame and all the exposed equipment as soon as you get back. Get that sand and salt off of your frame and drive train.
