Risks of 285/75/17 on Stock TRD Pro Rim?

I've been told that it's not wise to run a 285 tire on the stock TRD Pro rim, as they recommend a rim with min of 7.5". Obviously that isn't the case for the stock Pro Rims. I know there are replicas of the Pro rims made by FX that are 7.5 or 8", but I'm really hoping to do these on the stock rims, and I know a fair amount of you run them.

I've read the posts about them, but I'd like to have some more detailed information if that's possible.

For instance if I air down, should I be staying above a certain PSI to insure the tire doesn't come off the rim? Is that even a risk?

Are there any risks involved running them that way? From what I understand the center will wear quicker than the outer sections of the tire, but is that it? Will I have less traction if I have to stop abruptly?

Has anyone put the spare of it back under the 4Runner in the spare section? Fit? Doesn't fit? Modifications needed to make it fit?

I know there's the possibility of rubbing happening, and I'm hoping someone can send the link to the part needed as I can't seem to find it in the search area anymore.

I read something about rubbing on the UCA? Anyone had this issue? Do I need a spacer to run 285?

I'd be running them with the 2" TRD Pro lift if that even makes a difference as far as fitment.

I'm looking at the BFG KO2 tires if that matters.

Thanks!

I'm sure you already considered this but it wouldn't be a huge cost to sell your current wheels and pick up a set of the FX Pros. They are a great size and offset and FN is fantastic to deal with. This would give you significant peace of mind.

I've thought about it, but most of them have some scratches thanks to bushes on tight trails. Obviously nothing extreme like say a curb rub, but I guess I could look at going that route.

I don't think K02's come in size 285/75/17......I'm sure you meant 285/70.

Many, many 4Runner owners have ran 285 KO2's on OEM Pro wheels with no issues at all...aside from the normal rubbing that can occur with larger tires ect.

The pinch effect of a narrow rim will wear the center more at higher tire pressures and likely will actually keep the bead seated better when aired down.

DOH. Yes 70 lol. Thought that line looked wrong.

I ran that exact setup for about a year. I moved to 8.5" wheel and am happy I did.

The ride (to me) feels better - more cushion, i dont feel every tiny crack on the road. Also looks "better".

With the 285 on a 7" wheel it looked ballooned to me... (sidewalls bulged) rather then my 8.5 looks more straight.

Short Answer: Yes, youll be fine
Long Answer: go 275s or go bigger wheels.

from what ive seen on here

people running 285/70/17s on TRD rims have no issues with rubbing

but getting a 8.5'' rim and same tires they have to do a mount chop

can someone confirm this ?

Wider wheels usually means more back spacing and - offset. This causes potential body mount rubbing. It’s similar to adding wheels spacers on the Pro wheels.

I had to do a BMC with the 285/70/17 on the stock TRD wheels. YMMV. This is on a 19 PRO, with SPC uca's running at 4.3 degrees caster
Even with the BMC, I am too close to the pinch weld for comfort.
I am going to see if the alignment shop can back the caster down to about 3.25 or so to move the tire forward a bit. An additional 1/4 inch would be plenty.

ok so wait do you have a lift or no lift at all ?

im getting a 2021 Venture and thinking of putting the 285's on the stock rims.. should i be worried now

You need negative backspacing or spacers to clear the wheels from the upper control arms when you lift, regardless, you’re also going to need to chop the body mount to keep it from rubbing.

Sorry, 2.5 lift up front, rear is the Eibach adjustable coil setup.

I had the BMC done and am still a bit too close to the pinch welds... it doesnt rub, it is only about .4 inches at full lock
The MAIN difference in mine is the SPC uca's. I have over 4 degrees on both sides, that pulls the wheel/tire back toward the rear part of the fender well.
I am going to have the alignment shop move the tire forward by dropping to between 3.0 & 3.5 degrees.
It seems from posts here that using the stock uca's keeps the wheel a bit more centered and away from the body mount and pinch welds. 5/8 to 3/4 inch at full lock would be fine with me. Thats enough clearance for my peace of mind.
FWIW, I have over 1.5 inches of clearance between the tire and the uca, as currently set up. No issues there.

I think you're misunderstanding caster. If you reduce your caster the tire will get closer to the body mount/pinch welds. If you increase it it will get further away and give you more room. Have them increase it to 4.5 to 5 and you should be fine.

Running 285 Pirelli Scorpion AT+ on pro wheels with no lift (backordered) zero issues on pavement with standard bumper trip/push and mudflaps removed. I put the flaps back on and zip tied them back and they only rub at full lock when hitting a bump like turning into my driveway. Haven't done any real offroading since I'm sure I will rub when it flexes, but I have mashed it down dirt roads and climbed through some rocky areas. No rub with wheels straight. Little rub on the flaps if I'm turning.

2018 Pro here. I am running 285/70-17 Wildpeak AT3W’s SL on the factory Pro wheels, which really lend themselves to limited clearance issues due to the width and more importantly the offset. . I only have 1.5/1” Cornfed spacers on it with no other modifications to clear. As you know, the Pro is ~1” higher up front stock and has the fender liner trim mod done at the port. I have no issues with rubbing the mud flaps/bm, no rubbing on the factory UCA’s, maybe a very slight rub at full articulation on the fender well, but checked after going off road each time and notice nothing. I’m at about 3.5 on the caster, as I recall. 22.5” center to top of arch in front, 23.25” rear. I would’ve liked another .5” front and rear only for looks. My CV’s are not at much of an angle and any lower CG is better. I only air down to 20psi as I run an SL and the traction and ride quality is very good.

Nice, can you upload pictures at full lock?

The only ones I have are under slight to moderate articulation. Here are a couple. One is at the mud flap, the front fender and looking down from the top of the front fender.

I put 285/70 KO2s on my 19 TRDP with SPCs and stock wheels. Zero rub even with mudflaps on. Even when off-roading it there’s no rub. I have SPC arms and eibach front springs with a small shim 1/4” spacer on top of the strut mount. I wonder if your shop setup your SPCs wrong?
