Lift Options For KDSS
Hello Everyone,
I have had my ‘17 TRD ORP W/KDSS for about 7 months now and I’m loving it.
I’m currently running some 3” spacers that I put on a few weeks after getting the car, but now after a few large mods the stock suspension is starting to sag, so it’s time for a proper lift.
My only issue is since I have the KDSS option I’m not really sure what lift kits I can and can’t get. I have seen several threads for HOW to install a lift kit with KDSS, but not much on WHAT to install.
I’m looking for something around 4” with a mid to heavy duty option to support the added weight. Any of you guys that have installed something similar with your KDSS equipt rigs?
Side question, what is the tallest I could go without having to add supporting mods (UCAs, Dif Drop, etc), and if I did decide to go over that limit what would be the list of necessary supporting mods to make it happen?
Thanks, any input is appreciated!

3 inches about the max you can go with KDSS.
I went with Bilstein 6112/5160 combo, Icon light springs in rear and 700lb springs up front. I did add UCAs to avoid any alignment issues. Vendor told me it was not necessary, but was leaving on a trip the week everything was to arrive and did not want alignment issues to be a factor.

Will take some time, but google “5th gen 4Runner lift KDSS”.... you should get plenty of hits for T4R.org with threads discussing your topic. Don’t think you can go much above 3 inches tho w/our removing KDSS all together.
Happy hunting.

I have a Toytec Ultimate 3" with 650 front coils on a 2017 with KDSS. Have about 13,000 miles on it with no problems or issues. It holds a SSO Slimline front bumper and 10,000# winch.

KDSS has very little bearing on a suspension based lift up to 3"... except of course what is involved with the installation.

Beyond 3" lift you might want to consider canceling the sway bars.. though that defeats the purpose of having a KDSS vehicle.
I'm close to 3" lift without issue so far.

Here are 2 great options we have a struggle keeping in stock;
ICON Stage 2 Kit - K53062T
Comes standard with 650lb coils.
*You need to add Adjustable Track Bar for KDSS, Part #54200
KING Coilovers, Part #25001-243 and Rear Shocks, Part #25001-279 - Click Here
We stock these with Extended Travel and 600lb coils.
*KING Coilovers come standard with 550lb coils, but can be upgraded to 600, 650 and 700lb and no extra cost.
*You can also order Extended Travel at no extra cost.
Hope this helps with a couple options for KDSS owners.
When ordering online, remember to use Promo Code "T4R" for added savings on most brands.

Hey all, I am new here and not sure if this is the best thread to ask this on but I have 275/70/17 k02s on a stock kdss and the wheels are rubbing on the front fender and rear body mount. Does anyone know if the 5100 Bilstein 0.85 will alleviate this ( I wouldn't mind leveling out the rake) and also would this be compatible with the KDSS? Thanks for your help.

ICON Lift with KDSS
I have the tubular variety (not Alum billet) ICON Stage 7 lift with extended travel for about 3" of lift. The tubular UCA is required for that high of a lift and it's recommended for achieving the correct front alignment. I got the sealed Delta joints. TALV helped me put together the package for a good price.
Everything went great. I installed it in my garage. Don't ask me how long it took, but be prepared to park the car for a few days and not drive it while you finish. It can be done faster but you need a car lift and a shop to do it faster.
Yes, there are good threads here about installing the lift with KDSS. I read them all and printed one out before I started. I had that and the ICON instructions in a binder on the table for reference. You need to know the spec' torque for every bolt before you start. I found that from reading posts here. There's a Toyota illustration floating around here of the front and rear end suspension system that shows the torque for each bolt. I hear it's in the repair manual. There are several good videos on YouTube that are helpful. Also make a list of all the tools that are recommended and have them on hand before you start.
You need a floor jack, jack stands and cylinder jacks. You need to jack the KDSS up with a cylinder jack and it helped me to strap the front KDSS piston in place while I worked. Be safe. Make sure the car is fully supported by jack stands before you get under it. Maybe you know some of this from putting spacers in.
I feel like the Stage 7 trailing arms and trac bar did not add much since the instructions say to set them the same length as the OEM stock. I am not sure if my alignment shop checked the rear alignment or could adjust it better. The trailing arms are bigger and stronger. But looking at the upper rear trailing arm you can see it's only a relatively narrow solid rod, leading me to conclude that it's tension-only, so having a big tubular upper arm didn't add any strength, IMHO.

I have about 75,000 miles on my 3"/3" lifted rig with KDSS. No issues so far.
Big benefit of KDSS on a lifted rig is stability on road. If you top load your rig it can get pretty precarious on turns. (Also think existing load riding higher due to lift.)The extra sized sway bar and KDSS help a lot to counteract that.
3" is generally considered the high end for KDSS equipped rigs. However, the last link I referenced below would provide a solution allowing you to go long travel rear with KDSS. I might go down that path next.
see these threads for good info:
Let's talk about KDSS and sway bars
5th Gen. KDSS vs. Non-KDSS handling performance & sway bar diameter differences.

Toytec Boss. It's 3" up front and 2" in the back (levels it) but I actually got 4" more over the front skid which was great. Over 20k on mine now and great so far. Since the KDSS will push the wheel downward for more articulation (main reason I got KDSS), the Toytec Boss provides you with longer travel shocks. If you don't your shocks may lock out before you get to full articulation.
In addition, I recommend the Sonoran Steel Trac-bar as others have said. This will give you even more articulation if you have the long travel shocks installed with it. I installed this myself, but if I were to do it again I would probably hire someone to do it with better tools than I have available. I got it done but it wasn't easy for me with the limited tools that I have.

Your wheels look like they stick out more than stock, which is likely the source of your rubbing issues when turning. If you have wheel spacers, try removing them.
No problem installing Bilstein 5100s at any available height, including 0.85". They will be compatible with KDSS, but likely won't have much effect on your rubbing issues.

I have a 2016 trail with KDSS. I went with Dobinson since they make one specifically for T4R's with KDSS.
Dobinsons 5th Gen T4R Suspension options - lots of choices
this is the set-up i got;
C59-314 x 1
GS59-574 x 2
DD59-527K x 1
C59-725 with KDSS x 1
GS59-701 x 2
BJ59-001 x 2
It was a PITA to install but drives great and zero issues.
