Dash opening to left of usb port
Can somebody tell me what the small dash opening to the left of the usb port is intended for on a 2018 t4r? It seems really worthless given its shape. Just trying to figure out the best mount for a ham radio control head, will probably have to go with a cup mount.

I don’t know what its intended purpose is, but I put Velcro strips on the lower surface and on the underneath side of my brake controller. We don’t tow all that often, so it’s my temporary “mount” for the brake controller...not very elegant looking, but it only gets put there once every month or two for a couple days at a time.

Drill a hole in the back of the cubby and run the wires through. It will look loads better. I'm thinking about using that space for my scangauge.

If I left the controller in all the time, I certainly would consider doing that.....but we tow maybe 6-8 times a year. Set up like this it takes me literally 1 minute to install/uninstall.
I think that spot would be a great place for a scangauge.

Can't help for the small cubby, As far as the ham radio mount, I have done this with both Yaesu and Icom radios where the head separates. A small bracket that allows up and down movement is attached to a block of walnut that has felt around it. It is wedged in the larger cubby below the smaller one. As
@ Mutant138
said to another poster, drill a hole in the back for the separation cables for a clean install. I still need to do that on mine. However, remove the plastic unit before drilling so that you don't accidentally rip into a wire headed for something else.
Thought I had a picture but will post that later if you wish. This is my second 5th Gen and I did the same to the first one.
For antenna mounts, I used mag mounts last time around but this time I went fancy and used a Rago hood mount which is "Fantastic". Love that mount. It was a bit tricky to find the right LMO base but once I got it, it is incredible!
Cheers, Bob

I have a rubber liner in there and on top of that I carry a spare mag for my carry gun.

Until it flies out and hits your dick like a heatseeker. Which is 1000000000000x more likely than anyone having to reach into their dash for spare mag. I'm also sorry to say, that if you're in a situation where you need a spare mag for a carry pistol, and it's not on your person you're prob dead anyways.

I mounted the level control for my subwoofer there. Drilled a hole into the top and ran the wires from behind the radio. Looks nice / inconspicuous.
Before that? Threw my garage door opener in there.

FYI the 2018 Tacoma has the same pocket, except the Tacoma comes with a little rubber liner with a lip on the front edge.
The Tacoma liner fits in the 4Runner pocket damn near perfectly.
