Did you add some to the hatch too?

Adding sound deadener to the hatch doesn’t yield much improvement. Those speakers are very far from your ears. Plus, if you put too much deadener back there, the hatch door gets heavy and will wear out the gas struts that assist lifting and holding open the hatch. I had to replace mine.

I replaced all my interior speakers years before I replaced my head unit. I've owned 3 4Runners and replaced the speakers in all 3 of them. The paper cone garbage that comes in these trucks are so bad, just changing them to a quality speaker is a huge upgrade.

This is my 2nd 4Runner which I bought speakers from TacoTunes. First 4Runner I went with all the speakers + dual amps + sound processor. I had my own sub and aftermaket head unit -- it sounded AMAZIMG!
MY current 4Runner, I went with just speaker replacements from TacoTunes -- front components, and door/hatch speakers -- all made by Image Dynamics (as someone stated in an earlier post). I do have an after market head unit, but no amps, sub, or sound processor like I did in my previous 4Runner. It still sounds GREAT (better than OEM), but not AMAZING like my previous setup. I'll eventually add a 5-channel amp (not from TacoTunes) and small sub.
Either way - I personally think their Image Dynamic speakers are pretty solid and do sound way better than stock.

which set did you go with?
Im looking to replace the front door/ rear door and tweeters debating an amp as well.
Image Dynamics CTX65CS 6.75 Component Speakers $188
Toyota 4Runner Rear & Cargo Door Replacement Speakers - Plug and Play $119.99
Do I need all the additional items, speaker mount, wiring? Looking at about $350 for the two speakers, and another $300-400 for a 4 channel amp, I did just buy a sony 8100 stereo too
*amp found a good price one 4 channel so just deciding which speakers to go with

OEM Audio + is the brand of plug and play full sound systems.

You need to start from scratch because of the JBL system.

I agree. Sucks, but it is what it is.
A good set of headphones and bluetooth is far better than the JBL
