If you have never shot a firearm before the .22 cal is a great start
Get a revolver first/easy to clean/ simple in use/cheap.

Then as you get better you can move up.

join a gun club/take a NRA class.

I was lucky my father was my teacher 20+ years on the Police force. Taught me more then any class could
