I think the easiest fix is a junkyard which will probably have a tacoma or 4runner stereo for cheap.
If the stereo is receiving power, but not playing, then it isn't a wiring issue but something internal to the stereo. Not too many people consider a 16 year old stereo worth servicing.
Now's a good time to upgrade to an aftermarket stereo, a double din nav system fits in there perfectly.
