Have we been banned by the Marines?

See this article about the U.S. Marines banning "SNS" Social Netorking Sites. I suppose I should know this, but is a forum like this considered an "SNS"???

They mention twitter, facebook and myspace by name but then they say it also includes "other social media sites". Hopefully we're not included in this ban - I get PMs all the time from guys overseas serving in the military who tell me how much they enjoy this site, etc, and I'd hate to see the military ban sites like this.

I'm pretty sure it's just sites like Facebook, Myspace, etc...etc..... I'm typing this message onboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt, so it's definately not blocked!

It mentions web2.0 sites, I think maybe sites with RSS feeds would be next before discussion sites and forums. But it's anyone's guess. Interestingly, they didn't mention other similar sites like Friendster which started the social networking.
 
This is a good thing. From my perspective as an end-user computer support tech, I would say that a ban on social networking sites would be a good thing for most of the population. The lion's share of people who use the 'net are totally clueless about keeping their computers secure, and these sites are ratholes of malicious software.

I don't know. As a former Marine I can see why they banned this stuff. It is an Operations Security nightmare. In the blink of an eye a message can be sent anywhere in the world to anyone in the world telling them anything.

I can see the nitwit morons in the ACLU screaming about this already, but I am actually surprised that this was not already in place. It probably only applies to government-owned computers though.

I'm an active duty Marine stationed at Al Asad, Iraq. I'm currently on a det to Sahl Sinjar, Iraq. AA is an airbase, with lots of people. I was able to login during working hours with no problems. Now that I'm here in SS, pooping in a bag, and peeing in a pipe in the ground called "Sinjar Rapids" I'm still able to login during working hours. Shopping and Email such as Hotmail, etc is blocked until 1800 local time. ANYTHING having to deal with video games, adult content, myspace/facebook, is blocked at all times.

I'm flying on CH-46E helicopters supporting Operations in NW Iraq. I'm having a blast up here, and would rather have spent the whole deployment in SS. Sure you have AC, running water/showers/flushing toilets, and Wireless internet for personal laptop use in AA, but this is way better. Don't ask. I guess its a Marine thing. I wish I had my 4runner out here to play in the dunes!
 
This site would have to be specially cited in the ban list or common scripts used by these forum style pages would have to be blocked.
