Anyone know?

Scion wasn't acquired. Toyota created Scion, just as it did Lexus.

Scion is Toyota's poor brother, like Lexus is the rich one.

Scion was just created for the North American market like lexus and what Honda did with Acura. There's what we know as Scions in Japan but they just carry the Toyota badge.

Basically the average age of a Toyota owner is pretty up there. IIRC, only Buick's average age owner is higher. Toyota wanted to lower the average age of its owners, like rival Honda. The reason being is start them off young into the Toyota brand, and eventually, they'll move up to Lexus. Toyota tried to grab younger buyers with the Echo, but it attracted even older folks. So it was decided to create a new hip brand, Scion, for younger buyers, which will eventually move to Toyota and then Lexus.

There's an interesting strategy for Scion too. Scion is on pure pricing, each dealer sets its own price for Scion models. There's no haggling or negotiating on Scions, two different people will pay the same price for the same car from the same dealer. (IMO, Scion could've done better like Saturn and make the price the same across all dealers.) It's under the expectation that young buyers don't have experience in negotiating a "good deal" on a new car.

Scion

I know that Scion is the "youth" brand of Toyota.....but I see a fairly large number of 'geezers' driving around in them.

Scion needs to amp it up. There are a lot of q-tips driving around in xB's around the states.

The tC, arguably the sportiest car, is Camry derivative. Not a bad car, but boooooring.

Toyota originally tried to up the excitement level with the Paseo

Just having this brand available benefits Toyota. Especially from the whole stigma plauging the mother ship right now. I'd like to see them produce a light, fast 4-cyl turbo for under 30k, something to run alongside the GTI and Mazdaspeed 3.

The new Celica is going to be sweet but I'm waiting to see if Toyota delivers it solidly under $25k nicely appointed with options. Mazda keeps the Speed3 in the $25k range so Toyota needs to do the same.

The original xB is a funky car but is surprisingly comfortable and is quite well built and the interior materials are better than average that you'd find in a $15,000 car. Our is lowered with Tien coils which keeps body roll to a minimum and I like the body kit and spoiler and without them they look pretty plain but our looks like a sporty toaster and it gets a solid 31mpgs with mostly city driving.
